A Little History

Basketball has been a popular sport since its invention in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith. He was a physical education instructor at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts and he was asked to create a game that could be played indoors during the winter months. He was inspired by a childhood game he had played called “Duck on a Rock” and he thought of the idea to use a soccer ball and two fruit baskets as goals.

The first game was played with a soccer ball, two peach baskets nailed to the balcony railing of the Springfield YMCA gymnasium, and nine players. The score of the first game was 1-0, with William R. Chase making the only basket of the game.

The Evolution of Basketball

The original rules of basketball were modified over the years and by 1896, the game had two teams of five players each, and the basket was lowered to the ground. The first professional game was held in 1898 and was won by the Trenton Nationals.

The first basketball association, the National Basketball League (NBL), was formed in 1898. The first professional basketball league, the American Basketball League (ABL) was formed in 1925.

Basketball has since become a global phenomenon, with many professional leagues and thousands of athletes competing at the highest levels around the world. The NBA is the most popular professional basketball league in the United States, and it is broadcast in over 200 countries and territories.
