NFL History
The origins of the National Football League (NFL) can be traced back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, when various forms of football began to be played in the United States. The sport, which was derived from the English game of rugby, was played primarily at the college level, and had no organized professional league.
In 1920, the American Professional Football Association (APFA) was formed, with teams from four states: Ohio, Indiana, New York and Illinois. The league was renamed the National Football League (NFL) in 1922. At the time, the NFL was not yet the dominant professional football league in the United States; that distinction belonged to the American Football League (AFL).
The NFL struggled to gain a foothold in its early years, with teams frequently folding or moving to different cities. The league also had to compete with college football for fans and players. In 1933, the NFL reached a significant milestone when it adopted a playoff system to determine the league champion. The NFL Championship Game was first played in 1933 and was the precursor to the Super Bowl.
In 1960, the AFL was founded and it began to compete with the NFL for players, coaches, and fans. After several years of intense competition, the two leagues merged in 1970. This merger solidified the NFL as the dominant professional football league in the United States and helped to establish the Super Bowl as the premier sports event in the country.
Today, the NFL is a massive and lucrative enterprise, with teams in major cities across the United States. It is the most popular sports league in the country and generates billions of dollars in revenue each year from television contracts, ticket sales, and merchandising. New England Patriots: The Patriots are one of the most successful teams of the 21st century, winning six Super Bowls with quarterback Tom Brady at the helm. Head coach Bill Belichick is also considered one of the greatest coaches in NFL history.
