The Brown Bears is the official name used by all sports teams that play for Brown University located in Providence. Initially the university brought in real bears, however it was after the sixties games that the idea of using live bears was put aside and instead a person in a costume was introduced.

The collegiate program celebrated their first victory in 1901 when the Bears competed against the Holy Cross winning the game with a score of 29-10. Ever since then,  the Bears achieved wins in 1939 against the Wildcats, in 1955 against Northeastern, in 1971 absent Rhode Island, in 1983 against Dartmouth and then in 1991 against Providence College.
The successful basketball program has also made appearances in the NCAA Playoffs in 1939 competing with Villanova and then in 1986 where they played against Syracuse. The team also bagged their first Ivy League Championship title in the same year.
The current roster of the Bears consist of guards, Blackmon, Hobbie, Madigan, McGonagill, Sharkey, Spieth and Yiljep, center player, Maia and forward players, Halpern, King, Kuakumensah, Martin, Schmidt and Walker. The team is currently coached by Mike Martin who joined Brown University in 2004. He is assisted by T.J. Sorrentine who transferred to Brown from Vermont University in 2005, Boston College’s Dwayne Pina who joined in 2001 and William’s Kevin Snyder who started his tenure in 2009.
