They had allowed only 18 points on defense while scoring 186 points on offense. Hugo Bezdek, a Hall of Famer and head coach, described the team’s spirit “like a wild band of razorback hogs”. The University in the very next year, 1910, changed its nickname from Cardinals to Razorbacks. Later, under the leadership of Frank Broyles, head coach, the football team was awarded the National Championship by the Helms Athletic Foundation and the Football Writers Association of America in 1964. The Razorbacks, who were ranked number 2, played the most significant game in 1969. They played against top ranked Texas Longhorns. Some commentators and avid college football fans have described this game as historic. Even President Richard Nixon attended the game. Although, the Razorbacks lost, they played with the same spirit of “wild band of razorback hogs.

The basketball team of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, became a team to reckon with in 1970’s. Under the legendry coach Eddie Sutton along with superstars like Sidney Moncrief, Ron Brewer and Marvin Delph, collectively known as “The Triplets”, the team made it to Final Four. In 1994, the basketball hogs won the NCAA Tournament under the head coach, Nolan Richardson.

The track and field Razorbacks have been coached by John McDonnell for over 25 years. Under his guidance, the team has won 40 NCAA Championships. This remarkable record includes 11 cross country, 10 outdoor track and 19 indoor track Championships. Further, under McDonnell, the Razorbacks have won 38 out of 40 SEC titles, along with 37 South west Conference Championships. The Arkansas Razorbacks have completely dominated this sport with 5 wins of National Triple Crowns. However, ever since 1990’s when the two rivals were placed in two different conferences, they meet rather infrequently now. Recently, an old rivalry with Texas A&M University has revived. Since the Razorbacks fall in Southeastern Conference, a football rivalry has developed with LSU Tigers of Louisiana State University. The game between these two giants usually decides the SEC Western Division Championship. The winner of this championship game takes home a gold trophy called the “Golden Boot”. However, this rivalry is not just confined to football, the two are rivals in baseball as well. The two, for the past many seasons have been at the top of the NCAA attendance standings. Wildcats of the University of Kentucky and the Arkansas Razorbacks are rivals in basketball. The two have competed for national championships on annual basis.
