A minor league baseball team based out of Little Rock, Arkansas, the Arkansas Travelers, is also known as The Travs . The Travs are Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles of Anaheim, a major league baseball club. The Arkansas Travelers play in the Texas League. Six times winner of the league title, The Travs have also won their division title, once.

The team, formed in 1895, was named after a folk song, "The Arkansas Traveler". It is also the first baseball team to claim a whole state. Since the Travelers are part of the Texas League, hence they are classified as Double-A. A minor baseball league, the Texas League, operates in the South Central United States and has 8 eight teams in it. It was founded in 1902.

The Arkansas Travelers used to play their home games at Ray Winder Field from 1932 to 2006. However, it was decided that the stadium was too old for minor league baseball and in 2007 the team moved to Dickey-Stephens Park . The ballpark was named after two pairs of brothers, who loved the game immensely. They were Skeeter and Bill Dickey and Witt and Jack Stephens . It is important to mention here that Bill Dickey was also a baseball Hall of Famer. Dickey played for the New York Yankees and was there when the team won seven World Series titles. In his post-Yankees career, he also managed the Travelers for one season.

Dickey-Stephens Park, which replaced the aging Ray Winder Field, is primarily a baseball stadium. It can accommodate up to 7,000 spectators. Its dimensions are: Right Field – 330 ft, Right Center – 375 ft, Center Field – 400 ft, Left Center – 360 ft, and Left field – 332 ft. It is owned by the City of North Little Rock, Arkansas and was built with a hefty amount of $40.4 million. The money was raised with a joint collaboration between the city of North Little Rock, Little Rock financier Warren Stephens and The Travs. The city chipped in by approving one-cent sales tax and Stephens donated 11-acres of land. It was also his idea to name the ballpark after two pairs of baseball loving brothers. An unfortunate fact about this otherwise state of the art ballpark is that in July 2007 during The Travs and Tulsa Drillers game, Mike Coolbaugh, Drillers batting coach, who was standing in the first base coaches’ box, got struck in the neck by a powerfully hit line drive. Initially injured, Coolbaugh succumbed to his injuries an hour later.

As mentioned above, The Arkansas Travelers is a minor league baseball team and Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles of Anaheim. So what is a minor league baseball team? It is imperative to remember that all minor league baseball teams are professional baseball teams, just like major league baseball teams. It is just that these teams play at levels below the major league and provide budding ball-players to further hone their skills before making a bid for the major league. The minor league baseball, which was founded in 1869, has 240 teams, all operated as independent businesses. A minor league baseball team is affiliated with a major league baseball team through a legal document called Player Development Contract (PDC). This contract is either for a two-year term or a four-year term. Once the contract expires, a team is free to sign a new PDC with some other minor/major league, but in reality it doesn’t happen on regular basis. Once a minor league-major-league relationship is established through PDC, it is kept for longer periods of time.

While The Travs have had many memorable seasons, but the years, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1989, 2001 and 2008 were exceptional. These were the years when the Arkansas Travelers won the Texas League championship. In 2008, the team also won North Division title. They are having a great season this year as well. So be a part of America’s national past-time, by buying Arkansas Travelers Tickets now!
