Born in Indianapolis in the year 1959, Kenny Babyface Edmonds, started to play music when he was only in his teens. He became part of several bands during his teenage, singing R & B songs in the local gigs. He earned his nickname Babyface while he was part of the backing unit of Booty Collins. Subsequently, he became part of Manchild, which was a funk group. The group managed to get a recording contract in the year 1977, going on to release three records. However, the band broke up after their third album was released.
 
Following the break up of his band, Kenny Babyface Edmonds created a funk urban band along with Antonio “L.A” Reid in the 1980s. The band was named Deele, and went on to record several hit songs which managed to get on the R & B charts. Reid and Edmonds started to write songs for other musicians as well. Two of their most hit songs included Rock Steady by Whispers and Girlfriend by Pebbles. After Deele released their third record in the year 1988, the two musicians decided to form a recording label, which they named LaFace. The label was launched in 1989 and produced several hit songs such as Superwoman and The Way You Love Me by Karyn White; The Lover in Me by Sheena Easton, Every Little Step by Bobby Brown and numerous more as well.
 
Shortly afterwards, Kenny Babyface Edmonds launched his solo career. He released his first solo album in the year 1989 under the title of Tender Lover. The album went on to become a smashing success. It spun off four singles, including charting numbers such as Whip Appeal, which was placed on the number two spot on the R & B charts and It's No Crime, which went on to be placed on the number one spot. In addition to that, the record received a double platinum status.
