Date & Time

Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada, Winnipeg Goldeyes play in the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. Goldeyes initially played as the members of the Northern League but since 2010 they’ve been playing as the members of American Association’s North Division. American Association of Independent Professional Baseball is a separate league and has no affiliation with Major League Baseball whatsoever. American Association was founded back in 2006 and presently has a total of fourteen teams.

Winnipeg Goldeyes came into existence in 1994 as the members of Northern League, but in 2010, they moved to American Association. Originally the team played its home games at the Winnipeg Stadium, and kept on playing there up until 1998. From 1999 onwards, Goldeyes have been playing their home games at the Shaw Park which was initially known as the Canwest Park. The name of the team comes from the fish of the same name which is usually known as the Winnipeg Goldeye.

Over the years, Winnipeg Goldeyes haven’t been the only baseball team that surfaced from Winnipeg. In fact two baseball teams by the same name played from Winnipeg in different incarnations of the Northern League. The modern Northern League was founded in 1993 and ceased its operations in 2010. Before that, the original Northern League was founded back in 1902 and lasted up till 1971. The original Winnipeg Goldeyes played in the original Northern League during 1954 and 1964. During that period, the team managed to get a hold of league championship on three occasions; in 1957, 1959 and 1960. Before the original Winnipeg Goldeyes, Winnipeg was represented by the Winnipeg Maroons in the Northern League. Maroons played in the Northern League from 1902 to 1942.

After the original Winnipeg Goldeyes folded in 1964, the team was formed once again by the same name in 1994 after the resurrection of the Northern League in 1993. The team’s reformation was a result of Rochester Aces fold up. Rochester Aces ceased their operations and then relocated to Winnipeg. After their relocation, the team was then decided to be renamed after the team of the same name in the past. The present ownership of the team lies with Sam Katz, who’s also the current president of the team. Moreover, he also took charge as the mayor of Winnipeg in 2004. When it comes to comparison with other Northern League teams, Winnipeg Goldeyes stand as one of the most successful teams that ever played in Northern League. The team has always managed to make a playoff appearance throughout its entire history with exception of 2004 season. The team also missed the playoffs spot in the following season as well.

After their reformation, Goldeyes have been able to grab the league championship only once in 1994. Winnipeg Goldeyes became only team with the longest affiliation with the Northern League, after Sioux Falls Canaries, St. Paul Saints, and Sioux City Explorers left the Northern League, to join the newly formed American Association. All these three teams were later joined by the Winnipeg Goldeyes after they parted ways from Northern League on October 13, 2010. Apart from Goldeyes three other franchises also became the members of American Association that are Gary SouthShore Rail Cats, Kansas City T Bones and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

As of the moment, Winnipeg Goldeyes’ current season is well on its way. They started their first season in American Association with a match and victory against Fargo Moorhead RedHawks on their home turf. So far, Goldeyes’ position in the regular season seems strong, and with the fans continued support, they can be expected to do a lot more. So show your support to your team by getting your Winnipeg Goldeyes tickets for your desired fixture today. Support your team throughout their regular season, and cheer their way to victory.
