West Michigan Whitecaps
Affiliated with the Detroit Tigers that plays in the Midwest League, the West Michigan Whitecaps are a Class A minor league baseball team. They are currently the defending champions of the Midwest League.
Their home games are played in Comstock Park, Michigan. The Whitecaps were brought to West Michigan by local business men, Lew Chamberlin and Dennis Baxter.
The Whitecaps were affiliated with Oakland Athletics before they joined the Tigers’ farm in 1997. They came to the Grand Rapids area in 1994 upon the arrival of the former Madison Muskies.
It was most rewarding for Lew Chamberlin and Dennis Baxter when the West Michigan Whitecaps began to play in the Grand Rapids in 1994.
The two took on the challenge of bringing a minor league team to the area in 1984, and in February 1993, finally got the satisfaction they deserved when they announced the purchase of the Midwest League’s Madison Muskies franchise. The intention was to move the team the following year to Comstock Park Michigan.
Several records were also set during the 2006 season. The team posted the second best record in franchise history, and set a 26-6 record in July. Michael Hollimon hit 3 home runs in one game.
Cameron Maybin hit 2 grand slams in the season. Michael Hernandez became the first person ever in history of the Midwest League to hit the cycle twice. The Whitecaps went on to defeat the Kane County in four games to win the fourth Midwesat League Championship.
Chamberlin and Baxter along with 26 limited partners, in addition to purchasing the team, were able to secure private financing for the construction for the Fifth Ballpark. The Fifth Ballpark is one of the only professional baseball stadiums in the country to be constructed strictly with private funds.
Name-the-team contest allowed the West Michigan public to cast their vote on a name for the team. 1,800 fans entered the contest, which was concluded on September 26, 1993, when Chamberlin and Baxter selected the name ?Whitecaps’.
Twenty-two fans choose the name ?Whitecaps’, and ?Brian Glass of Rockford’ was chosen the winner.
The Whitecaps play 70 home and 70 road games each season. ”Home” is Fifth Third Ballpark, a privately-owned stadium built in conjunction with the ‘Whitcaps’.
The West Michigan Whitecaps are a professional minor league baseball team, and it is a member of the 14-team Midwest League and Class A affiliate. The Whitecaps are co-owned by businessmen Lew Chamberlin of Grand Rapids and Dennis Baxter of Muskegon.
The Whitecaps/YMCA Inner City Youth Baseball Program, who are general partners, have worked to widen the team’s charitable programs.
This is apart from their own charitable cause. Their facilities have presented a wonderful opportunity to non-profit organizations whom with their fund raising efforts make the ballpark available for special events on non-game days.
Throughout the year the parking lot is utilized for many fundraising walks and runs. They also allow non-profit organizations to set up displays on the concourse during games in order to publicize their cause.
They also allow a limited number of organizations the opportunity to hold 50/50 raffle in the stands during games. Half the money goes to the lucky ticket winner, and the other half goes to the participating non-profit organization. Many organizations have been assisted by these raffles.
