The sports club is renowned for their football team that has been very successful in basking in the glorious victory by winning national championships five times in total. As the current standings report, the VfB Stuttgart is still the undefeated champions of the Bundesliga premier. The VfB Stuttgart comprises of an A and a B team, the A team plays its home games at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion, situated in the Cannstatter Wasen sports complex whereas the B reserve team plays in the Regionalliga, two divisions below Stuttgart.
The VfB Stuttgart sports complex does not only have a successful history with its football team. A myriad of other sports have been adding trophies and wins for the sports team. The athletics team of the club has won numerous titles and medals. Different sports teams of the club play at different levels of the game. History
VfB stands for Verein f?r Bewegungsspiele. VfB Stuttgart was originally formed by the amalgamation of their predecessor sides Stuttgarter FV and Kronen-Club Cannstatt in 1912. During the time of the merger, both clubs were in its nascent growth and recruited amateurs trying to hone their abilities and increase their skill sets in various games and disciplines.
FV Stuttgart
The logos of both the teams that ended up merging on 1912 predecessor sides Stuttgarter FV 93 and Kronen-Club Cannstatt was founded at the Zum Becher hotel in Cannstatt on 9 September 1893.FV started out as a rugby team only and played at the at St?ckach-Eisbahn before moving to Cannstatter Wasen in 1894. It was not until late 1908, did the club establish a separate team for football. Under the supervision of teacher Carl Kaufman, the new football team started its recruitment process and ensured only the players that seemed to be long term prospects to the game and club added to the team portfolio. The hard work of recruitment and training of Kaufman quickly paid off when their team became the runners up in the FSV 1897 Hannover championship.
Financial crisis started eroding the excellence and ratings of theVfB Stuttgart club in the mid 70?s. The club was not being managed well and lack of sponsorships created a larger gap between finance and requirements. Various attempts were done to come and bridge the gap but to no avail. In a die situation of being relegated to the second Bundesliga tournament, the club elected the local politician Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder as the new president. Irrespective of a major change in leadership. The team faced a tie in the final game and lost its Bundesliga status. The first season in second league, considered the worst in its history, ended with VfB being ranked 11th, having even lost a home game against local rival SSV Reutlingen in front of only 1200 spectators. The entire spirit, courage and encouragement from all segments of the game were diminishing.
The team made some major changes in the coaching and added J?rgen Sundermann and new talents like Karlheinz F?rster and Hansi M?ller into the team, this enabled the team to return to top flight play after just two seasons.2000-2007 The post-MV-era return to successLuck was not favoring the management or the team. The players started loosing interest and more absentees were seen on the field. High salaries of the players and management could not be paid. Debt was increasing and the sports club could not maintain the financial rankings required to push forward Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder resigned from VfB and new president Manfred Haas came to the front line and had a huge uphill task of ensuring financial stability to the depleted club. The new president had to renegotiate expensive contracts with the players as well as the sponsors. A comprehensive uplift took place in 1976 and only low salaried yet highly talented players could only be incorporated into the team
Moving forward with the uplift and getting the team back in high gear, Coach Ralf Rangnick had started a restructuring of the team that won the UI Cup, but the resulting extra strain of the UEFA cup participation ended in barely escaping from relegation in 2001 by clinching 15th spot. Rangnick was replaced by Felix Magath.During the 2002-03 season, it was neither the coaches nor the management that kept the winning streak for the team but the individual performances of key players like Andreas Hinkel, Kevin Kur?nyi, Timo Hildebrand and Alexander Hleb. These young talented individuals kept the momentum going and earn themselves the nickname the young and wild. The club soon re-bounded and finished as Bundesliga vice-champions in the 2002-03 season.
Champions League 2003/04
This qualified VfB for their second Champions League appearance and, beating Manchester United and Rangers F.C. once and Panathinaikos Athens twice, they advanced out of group play to the first knock out round where they were eliminated by their old nemesis Chelsea F.C. (0:1 and 0:0) (see also UEFA Champions League 2003-04).The team kept on fighting to ensure an improvement of their rankings. Yet they were able to only clench fourth and fifth place Bundesliga finishes. The team got themselves into the UEFA Cup, but without great success. Coach Magath and players like Kevin Kuranyi, Philipp Lahm, Aliaksandr Hleb left the team leaving with them the outcomes of the team in despair and shock.
Champions League 2007/08
The team was successful in competing in the finals of the championship league on August 30, 2007.
