US Airways Center is a sports and entertainment facility located in Phoenix, Arizona. It is formerly known as America West Arena. The Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury professional basketball teams play at the US Airways Center. The Arizona Rattlers play arena football, and the Phoenix Roadrunners play hockey, both at the US Airways Center. Many concerts are held at the US Airways Center. The Center has always provided the maximum entertainment to the entire community of Phoenix. Keeping in view of its popularity, the center has been designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride.
The arena is situated down the street from Chase Field. It is named after its sponsor, US Airways, under a naming rights arrangement. After America West’s merger with US Airways, the arena was renamed from America West Arena to US Airways Center. The name changing took place in January 2006.
The NBA’s Phoenix Suns, the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, the AFL’s Arizona Rattlers, and the ECHL’s Phoenix Roadrunners use this wonderful arena as their home. The NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes previously availed the opportunities of playing here from 1996 to 2003. Since then, the Phoenix Roadrunners of the ECHL have made this venue their home. The marvelous US Airways center was also the home of the indoor soccer team Arizona Sandsharks.
The America West Arena hotsted three of the games of the 1993 NBA Finals. It also hosted one of the three 1998 WNBA finals games and two ArenaBowl games. The Rattlers won ArenaBowl XI at America West Arena In 1997. The 1995 NBA All-Star Game was held at this arena.
The US Airways Center has the honor of hosting WWE SummerSlam in 2003. WWE Judgment Day was also held at this arena in 2006.
In addition to sports events, US Airways Center has been the venue of many popular concerts. For concerts, the stage is normally placed on the north side of the floor, and additional seats are added on the floor in the center. Many famous singers and musical acts, such as dc Talk, The Spice Girls, Britney Spears, REO Speedwagon, *NSYNC, The Backstreet Boys, Green Day, Blink 182, Gwen Stefani, Vicente Fernandez and others have performed at the arena.
Oscar de la Hoya had one of his first professional boxing bouts (versus Narciso Valenzuela) there, and Michael Carbajal also fought there various times.
The construction of US Airways Center began in 1988. The arena was officially inaugurated in 1993. In the opening game, Suns defeated the Los Angeles Clippers with 111-105. After the Suns failure in winning the NBA championship that year, a parade that attracted more than 300,000 Suns fans finished up at the arena.
US Airways Center will be hosting both WWE Monday Night Raw and Saturday Night’s Main Event on March 5, 2007.
