Uncle Vanya history dates back to the late 1800’s, it was written by renowned Russian drama writer Anton Chekhov. Born in Taganrog Russia in 1860 Chekhov was a true genius as he was a play writer, a short story writer and also a Physician. Apart from Uncle Vanya he had also written classic drama plays like A Marriage Proposal, A Reluctant Tragic Hero, The Seagull, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard . Chekhov wrote Uncle Vanya in 1899-1900 and this play was primarily an extensive adaptation of one of his famous previous works which was a four-act comedy play called The Wood Demon which he wrote in 1889.

Uncle Vanya can be termed as a sadder version of The Wood Demon . Chekhov made some primary changes in this play such as the ending was converted into a failed murder whereas in the original play it was scripted as a climactic suicide. Overall cast was reduced from almost two dozen characters to just nine and the play ending was made tragic instead of the happy ending in the original script. The play is set in the Garden of the Serebryakov family estate and the cast includes Aleksandr Vladimirovich Serebryakov (a retired professor whose estate is being looked after by Vanya and Sonya), Elena Andreyevna (professor’s wife), Sofia Alexandrovna (professor’s daughter), Maria (mother of Vanya), Ivan Petrovitch (47 year old main character and Sonya’s uncle), Mikhail Astrov and Marina Timofeevna (an old nurse).

Published in 1897 the Uncle Vanya first premier took place in Moscow City. It was directed by Konstantin Stanislavski and staged at the very famous Moscow Art Theater in 1899. Since then it has been revived at difference occasions, in 1957 it was revived as an Off Broadway production which was directed and produced by acclaimed stage actor Franchot Tone, he also acted in this play.
