In indie pop music, one of the most talked about emerging acts goes by the name of Twenty One Pilots. Founded in 2009, the indie pop band, whose music is laced with rap, rock, alternative rock and electronica, is signed onto Fueled by Ramen. In 2010, Twenty One Pilots released two tracks via SoundCloud; in 2011, Nick Thomas and Chris Saith left the band. Joseph was then joined by Josh Dun, who had been the House of Heroes live drummer. Later that year, the duo released a second album, titled Regional at Best. They also played live at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio, attracting the attention of many record labels. They were ultimately signed onto Fueled by Ramen, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records.
In 2012, the band released a music video for one of their songs, Goner, and began working on their studio debut album. They played a sold out concert at Lifestyle Communities Pavilion and released a three song EP via Fueled by Ramen titled Three Songs. In 2012, they went on tour with Walk the Moon and Neon Trees, playing many venues across the US. Their first studio album, titled Vessel, was produced by Greg Wells, a producer who has produced the albums of Katy Perry and Adele. Released in early 2013, the album rose up the Billboard 200 and also charted on the Digital Albums Chart, the Internet Albums Chart, the Rock Albums Chart and ranked tenth on the Alternative Albums Chart.
The song Holding on to You from their studio debut received a lot of airplay across the US and ranked eleventh on the Billboard Alternative Songs. Two more singles, similarly, rose up the charts with one even ranking high up the Japan Hot 100. Music videos for the three singles were also released. In 2013, the duo also opened for Fall Out Boy. The duo has appeared on Conan where they played the song House of Gold. During Christmas holidays, the band also released several music videos for two of their songs, Truce and Migraine.
In 2014, the Pilots played live at SXSW, on a set at the mtvU Woodie Awards. They also played live at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards. By then, demand for the duo had soared, with shows at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Firefly amongst others. This led to their first international tour, the Quiet Is Violent World Tour.
