A few singles charted later in the US, where listeners got interested after watching the British invasion by the band. The Heartbreakers were dragged into an unpleasant controversy when Petty refused to be transferred to a new label without consent as ABC was sold to MCA Records. He filed for bankruptcy. The band’s return to the recording scene with 1979’s Damn the Torpedoes was a blistering success but another feud erupted as MCA overpriced his next album prior to release by one dollar above the norm. With Petty’s public condemnation of the act, MCA went back on the idea & Hard Promises became a major hit. Howie Epstein replaced Blair on bass in 1982 & The Heartbreakers enjoyed critical success in the mid 80s with a bit of psychedelic rock experimentation before collaborations with Bob Dylan in the late 80s. The Heartbreakers registered a string of hits off Into the Great Wide Open & Greatest Hits in the early 90s. Singing for film soundtracks, Petty then let all lyrical hell loose on 2002’s The Last DJ, a critically acclaimed stinging attack on the face of the music industry. “Runnin’ down the Dream” was a 2007 four-hour film that chronicled the band’s fortunes over the years, & the Heartbreakers have managed to create quite a stir with the 2010 release of Mojo.

“Breakdown” & “American Girl” off the eponymous debut album both peaked at #40, introducing listeners to The Heartbreakers’ sound. 1978’s You’re Gonna Get It! Was certified gold, before Damn the Torpedoes & Hard Promises ushered in a successful early 80s era. “Refugee”(#15), “Don’t Do Me Like That”(#10) & a Stevie Nicks collaboration “The Waiting” made the albums hit triple platinum & platinum status respectively. Southern Accents went platinum on the back of the psychedelic “Don’t Come around Here No More” in 1985. Into the Great Wide Open & Greatest Hits comfortably crossed the platinum mark with “Learning to fly” & “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”. The Last DJ received great critical acclaim, while Mojo is currently doing the rounds.
