Washington Ballet stands amongst some of the finest professional ballet ensembles across the nation. Washington Ballet boasts having some of the most athletic and talent ballet dancers, whose professionalism and proficiency flaunts in each of their performances. Washington Ballet came into existence in 1976 under the leadership of a well known ballet dancer, Mary Day. The Washington Native, Mary Day, took charge of the ensemble as its first Artistic Director, and kept this position till 1999. She was then succeeded by Septime Webre, who took charge as the artistic director in 1999, and is the current director of the Washington Ballet .

Before founding Washington Ballet, Mary Day had already earned quite a lot of fame as a ballet dancer; hence she was cited to be the ‘Grand Dame of Ballet in the Nation’s Capital’. To excel further as a Ballet Dancer, Mary Day decided to form up a nationally recognized organization, which would be known for its quality and professionalism throughout the country. It was that decision and it was that vision that led to the foundation of the Washington School of Ballet as well as the Washington Ballet company. The Washington Ballet was established in 1976, however the Washington School of Ballet was founded in 1944 by Mary Day and Lisa Gardiner, who was Mary Day’s mentor.

After the creation of the school, many ballet dancers enrolled and trained at the school. And finally when they attained enough training to be called the pre-professional ballet dancers, that group of dancers then performed extensively along with National Symphony Orchestra throughout nation’s capital during the 50s. In addition to National Symphony Orchestra, the dancers also performed along with D.C, Recreation Department, and National Cathedral. As the word of their performances spread, they were also seen performing in other places like West Virginia, Dominican Republic as well as New York.

By 1961, Mary Day took the Washington Ballet to a whole new level of exposure, when they premiered their production of The Nutcracker alongside the National Symphony Orchestra. The premiere was held in the Constitution Hall, and started off a tradition of staging live performances during holiday season. Apart from amusing the ballet lovers during the holiday season, the Washington Ballet also started performed for the younger dancers of Washington School of Ballet. During the first season of the Washington Ballet, the three works of the ensemble were choreographed by Choo San Goh, who later took charge as the association artistic director as well as the resident choreographer. During his lifetime as the resident choreographer of the ensemble, nineteen works were choreographer by him.

Washington Ballet kept on growing and by 80s and 90s they started performing full seasons. Although they performed their seasons in Washington, but the ensemble also toured occasionally to other countries like Spain, Singapore, South America, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, China and a lot more. Before her death in 2006, Mary Day left charge as the artistic director of the Washington Ballet in 1999, and this is when Septime Webre stepped up as the new artistic director of the Washington Ballet.

Under his leadership Washington ballet flourished a lot and many new challenges were undertaken by the ensemble. Furthermore, under his leadership, the Washington Ballet’s repertoire expanded magnificently; hence widening the scope of the ballet. Great national as well as international exposure and popularity followed shortly after when the quality and the caliber of the Washington Ballet’s performances was pushed up a notch. Some of the additions made to the Ballet’s repertoire by Webre include Carmen, Oui/Non, State of Wonder, Cinderella, Journey Home, Juanita y Alicia, and some more.

Apart from performing their own works, the ballet has also performed the works of other great choreographers like Twyla Tharp, Trey McIntyre, Christopher Wheeldon, George Balanchine and Edwaard Liang. As of the moment, Washington Ballet’s regular season is in full swing, so if you want to be amused by any of their performances, it is recommended that your grab your Washington Ballet tickets today.
