Prince Rogers Nelson, also known as Prince was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S on 7 th June 1958. He was born into a family of musicians. His father was a songwriter and a pianist whereas his mother was a jazz singer. It would not be untrue to say that the love for music was there in him from the very beginning. After the separation of his parents he started living with his neighbor the Andersons and became very good friends with their son Andre Anderson who was later on known as André Cymone. They both studied at Minneapolis’s Central High School and it was there that they met Charles Smith who was Prince’s cousin. He was working in a band as a drummer and due to him both Prince and Anderson joined it as well. The name of the band was Grand Central . Later on Smith was replaced by Morris Day. Prince used to play guitar and piano and their band played at clubs in the Minneapolis area. The name was then changed to Champagne and it was then that they started playing their own original tracks.

In 1976 Prince signed a contract with Warner Bros which led to the recording of his first album For You, which was recorded at Record Plant Studios. The album was released in 1978. In the year 1975 Pepe Willie who was Prince’s cousin Shauntel’s husband, had formed a band known as 94 East in collaboration with Kristie Lazenberry and Marcy Ingvoldstad. Pepe hired Prince and Andre to record tracks with them. This proved to be a breakthrough in Prince’s career as a musician and also as a singer. His immense talent and undying passion for music took him a long way ahead. The songs were mostly written by Willie and Prince made music with the guitar. He also worked as a cowriter and has written a song, Just Another Sucker . There were numerous other tracks recorded by the band and they were later on compiled into an album entitled Minneapolis Genius – The Historic 1977 Recordings . Another milestone in Prince’s career came in 1995 when Willie released an album 94 East featuring Prince. The most important part of the album was that all the songs it contained were original recordings by Cymone and Prince. Their effort was appreciated by people at large.

In 1979 Prince created a band of his own which included Dez Dickerson on guitar, André Cymone on bass, Bobby Z on drums, Doctor Fink and Gayle Chapman on key boards. They performed their first show at Capri Theater on 5 th January 1979. In the same year he released a self titled album called Prince . It proved to be at number four on the Billboard Top R&B/Black Albums charts . Success for Prince did not stop here. His album contained two R&B hits: Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad? and I Wanna Be Your Lover. It sold more than a million copies and reached number 11 on the Billboard top hundred and for two weeks stayed at number one on the Hot Soul Singles chart . His song Around the World in a Day , held number one position on Billboard for three consecutive weeks. In the year 1986 his album Parade reached second position on the R&B charts and was at number three on the Billboard. This album was made as a sound track for Prince’s second film Under the Cherry Moon . He was also the director of the movie and was given Golden Raspberry Award for his acting as well as directing. In the same year he started a new series of live performances known as Hit N Run Tour. In 1999 he signed a contract with another important label Arista Records to release a new album called , Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic which proved to be successful .
