Once is a theatrical reincarnation of an Irish movie by the same name. The story of the play, just like the movie, revolves around a guy and a girl falling for each other through their mutual love for music. The guy in question is referred to as “Guy” in the play whereas the girl is referred to as “Girl.” The Guy is an Irish street musician whereas the Girl is a Czech immigrant. The Guy plays guitar locally in a bar and one day as he is about to leave after his performance the Girl, who is a single mother, comes to talk to him.  A conversation between them ensues and it is discovered that all the songs that he has written are directed towards his former unfaithful girlfriend. The Girl is a piano player and that conversation eventually leads the two of them to play a song written by him. From that day onwards they team up to write, play and record song together which in turn helps the two of them get to know each other better.
 
One night they both go to a night club and the Guy plays there. The two of them then manage to convince a bank manager, who himself plays a guitar, to invest in his music. The manager becomes a member of their group. The Guy and the Girl have by then fallen in love with each other but neither have opened up about their feelings. The Guy records for a big record label and asks the girl to come to New York with him. When he eventually decides to confess about his feelings, the plot turns on its head that leads to a heartwarming ending to this sensational musical.
 
Once made its debut at the New York Theater Workshop on 6^th December, 2011. John Tiffany is the director and Steven Hoggett choreographed this epic. Steve Kazee plays the Guy whereas Cristin Milioti is the Girl. The production was an immense hit that received multiple Lucille Lortel Awards and topped that with winning a New York Drama Critics Circle award. The immense success paved the way for it to grace the Broadway stage. Once made its Broadway debut in February 2012 and became a rage the moment curtain was raised for the very first time. Fans and critics went crazy. It was nominated for a staggering eleven Tony Awards out of which it managed to win eight. This wonderful musical also earned six nominations for the Drama Desk Awards and won four to solidify its status as one of the most amazing theatrical production in recent memory.
 
Once is simply a must watch production. It might not have the glitz and glamour of other productions but it more than makes up for it through brilliance on stage. Both the Guy as well as the Girl more than justify their selections for the roles they played. That coupled with amazing on screen presence, choreography, direction and musical score makes it an experience that simply has to be experienced. Steve and Cristin shine through as absolute stars in the play. There aren’t many plays that give you the feeling you were part of something truly magical.
