The Improvisation, more commonly referred to as simply The Improv, is a well-known franchise of comedy clubs. Its venues host performances by stand-up comedians as well as musicians. Since the company’s inception, it has opened venues all over the United States. These venues have become the premier destination for live comedic entertainment. They have featured appearances by some of the biggest names in American comedy and continue to be a vehicle for fresh talent. As a result, the clubs have become very popular with audiences and The Improv tickets are always in high demand.

The Improv was started in the mid-1960s by Budd Friedman, who wanted a place where Broadway performers could congregate after their shows. He imagined a small and intimate club-like environment where these actors, musicians and singers could unwind. They would be free to socialize, eat, drink and maybe even develop ideas by improvising short acts together.

To this end, Friedman opened the first ever Improv in Hell’s Kitchen, New York. After a short time, the establishment became a hit with young Broadway artists, just as Friedman planned. The club turned into one of the trendiest ones in the city, where aspiring musicians, actors or singers could come to display their talent. On any given night, future legends like Liza Minnelli, Peter Allen and Judy Garland could be found performing together. A year after its opening, an amateur stand-up comedian took the stage at the club to test his new material. This caused other comics to follow and soon the Improv started to catch the attention of a different kind of crowd. The rest, as they say, is history.

Over the course of the following years, the Improv’s name became synonymous with live comedy. It was the only place at the time that was dedicated specifically to stand-up. Young comedians all over the country competed for Friedman’s attention for a chance to perform at the club. Jay Leno drove from Boston to New York once a week to spend time at the Improv, in the hopes of catching someone’s attention. Future actress and renowned stand-up comedian Lily Tomlin hijacked a limousine to make a grand entry for her meeting with Friedman.

Playing a successful set at the soon-to-be legendary establishment meant everything to these performers. Its stage turned into one of the most important ones in all of show business. From one night to the next, an impressive lineup of future stars could be seen performing at the club. It comes as no surprise, then, that almost every famous American comic has gotten their start at the Improv. These include artists like George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Rodney Dangerfield, Robin Williams, George Burns, Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld and many more. Many more legends worked at the club in other capacities. Karen Black and Elaine Booster were waitresses, while Dustin Hoffman regularly played piano. Other employees have included Keenan Ivory Wayans, Danny Aiello and Joe Piscopo.

As the business continued to be a success, Friedman decided to expand it and opened a club in Hollywood, California. By this point, the Improv had become a very recognizable brand name. Its stage, with a red-brick wall in background and a piano in the corner, had become iconic. Like the New York venue, many up-and-coming entertainers worked at the Hollywood Improv, either as performers or as part of the staff. Many future executives also worked at this venue, including the current president of CBS, Lesley Mooves.

The franchise continued to thrive throughout the 1970s. During the 1980s, the Improv became even more popular, thanks to a cable TV show titled An Evening at the Improv. The subsequent increase in the brand’s audience made the biggest comedy stage in America even bigger. Eventually, Friedman partnered with Mark Lonow to expand the Improv even further and to make it more profitable. As a result, clubs were opened in several new locations, including San Diego, Washington, Dallas, Cleveland and Las Vegas, among others. For the first time, comedy fans in many cities could now see their favorite acts in person in an intimate setting.

The Improv has come to cement itself as a legendary part of American pop culture. For fans, it is the go-to-location for live comedy. For up-and-coming comedians, it is the ideal start-up platform. Currently, there are twenty two Improv clubs all over the country and the list is still expanding. The brand has been featured in many movies and is becoming wildly popular with audiences. Needless to say, the Improv tickets are a hot commodity.
