The band was originally formed in the sunny, sunbathing Hermosa Beach of California in 1978. It initially consisted of Frank Navetta on guitar, Bill Stevenson on drums and Tony Lombardo on bass guitar. It released its one and only single with this lineup called “ Ride the world ” with new wavish undertones. Then in 1980, Stevenson introduced his friend Milo Aukerman on vocals and the band was complete to rock into the hearts of its listeners. It made its music and lyrics popular using pure wittiness and wry humor. The Descendents were funny, adorable and not afraid of having a good laugh at themselves. Their fans could actually relate to them as they brought real feelings of the young generation in their songs with foot tapping music and humorous lyrics. Their EP in 1981 was appropriately named “ Fat” and it touched issues like obsession with fast-food with a self-deprecating twist. A popular song in it was “ My Dad Sucks” expressing clearly the normal teen angst and emotions.

In 1982, “ Milo goes to College” was released as the band’s first album, which was an unadulterated version of the essence of their music. The songs were melodious with empathic lyrics; the Descendents sang about girls in “ Hope”, “Marriage” and rejection in “ I’m not a Loser” and “Parents”.

However, Milo actually went to college to study biochemistry so the band went through a break with no songs till 1985. There were some changes in the band’s lineup in this time as Stevenson also left for another band. In 1985, the album “I don’t want to grow up” was released; a sensitive album with real emotions with which people could relate.

“ Enjoy” in 1986 was not considered that big a masterpiece as humor was overdone so that it became somewhat silly. However, the band thrived on its previously earned popularity and the tours continued to be successful. After the tours for “ Enjoy”, the band again went through changes and then arrived at the excellent combination of Karl Alvarez, Stephen Egerton, Bill Stevenson and of course, Milo Aukerman. The 1987’s “ All” was an embodiment of sensitivity, intelligence, ambitions and maturity. It was pure talent and melody rocking the listeners’ souls. Songs like “Coolidge” and “Clean Sheets” defined the Descendents with their emotional lyrics and sensitive humor. The band became legendary for their “all” philosophy of an endless quest and pursuit of happiness.

The band broke again as Milo left for further education. A replacement band “ All” continued the legacy and waited for the previous popularity to be regained. In 1995, Milo , the fully fledged research biochemist, came back to record “Everything sucks”. The band again started touring and entertaining their fans through their exhilarating live performances. More reunions happened and fans were entertained by pure punk rock and lively music. In 2004, the album “ Cool to be You” was released, which was another emotional and sensitive masterpiece. One thing is for sure, the band got better, more mature and melodious with each new release.

So, whenever we feel that the Descendents are long gone, they come back with a vengeance. It keeps on happening so get used to it and get ready for some fun and enjoyment with your friends. Enjoy a purely witty band that knows how to be one with their audience. The Descendents have some great songs up their sleeves so their live performances are stimulating, thrilling and pure fun. They should not be missed at all. They really know how to give a live performance. Their fans adore them and they are legendary for their “All” philosophy. Their songs give an emotional boost so even if you are a non-fan, do think about attending one of their events and you will not regret it. Give it a shot and do attend.
