The Big Knife is a spectacular American play, produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company, and based upon the classic tale by Clifford Odets. It follows a story that has become quite popular in American fiction, so much so that many have already ordered The Big Knife tickets for this particular production of the musical. But that is hardly a surprise because this is a play directed by a Tony Award winning director and featured a cast that has been nominated for Tony Awards and Emmy Awards, as well as won some of them.
 
The play takes place in the golden age of Hollywood, at a time when studio executives held all the power, particularly over actors, who only had all the glory. One such actor, Charlie Caste, is an actor under the Hoff–Federated Studio which has helped cover up a mistake that would have potentially meant the end of his career. Being the studio’s most successful actor, it covered up his mistake. However, everything threatens to unravel when a woman with knowledge of the mistake threatens to reveal it all. It then follows with the studio going all out to step the revelation of Charlie Castle’s biggest secret. The plot continues, reaching a point where Charlie Castle has to decide how far he can go for his glory. This is thus the plot of this play, which looks at how big a challenge it is to stay true to one’s self in the presence of mounting pressure. Added to being emotionally captivating, it is also comic at times, resulting in a new theatrical experience.
 
Produced by Roundabout Theatre, The Big Knife is directed by Doug Hughes, a Tony Award winning director, starring, amongst others, Bobby Cannavale. He is the recipient of an Emmy Award and a Tony Award nomination. The play is set to be performed at the American Airlines Theatre, located conveniently on Broadway. Members of the cast include many of the best and biggest stars on Broadway today. The riveting role of Dixie Evans is played by Rachel Brosnahan with Charlie Castle played by Bobby Cannavale. Marin Ireland plays the role of Marion Castle with Ana Reeder playing the role of Connie Bliss.
 
The character Smiley Coy is played by Reg Rogers with Buddy Bliss, yet another character in the play, played by Joey Slotnick. Brenda Wehle plays the role of Patty Benedict with Chip Zien playing the role of Nat Danziger. At the top the cast, directing the play, is Tony Award winning director, Doug Hughes. The technical team of the play includes John Lee Beatty designing the sets, Catherine Zuber designing the costumes and James F. Ingalls on the lighting. David Van Tieghem is responsible for the sound and original music.
 
This play promises to be highly successful, like the original production that premiered on Broadway in 1949 and which was directed by the iconic Lee Strasberg. Dough Hughes is just the director to direct such a play. With Roundabout Theatre, he recently directed the world premier of Death Takes A Holiday, by Maury Yeston as well as the Broadway production of the sensational Mrs Warren’s Profession. He has also recently directed A Man For All Seasons, starring Frank Langella, A Naked Girl on the Appian Way featuring Jill Clayburgh and A Touch of the Poet with Gabriel Byrne as a cast member.
 
This is a play originally written by Clifford Odets which was also adapated into a hit movie during the fifties. The movie was directed and produced by Robert Aldrich with screenplay by James Poe and narration by Richard Boone. It featured such iconic actors of its time as Jack Palance, Wendell Corey, Ida Lupino, Jean Hagen, Shelley Winters and Rod Steiger. The movie went on win the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
