Having been an annual musical staple for more than a decade, the Summer Camp music festival sparked off in 2001. seeing a crowd of about 1,000 troop to the Three Sisters Park located in Chillicothe, Illinois to be serenaded by some 20 acts over the course of two days on a dual stage setup. It is organized by Jay Goldberg Events & Entertainment as well as Jam productions, with Ian Goldberg of the former entity having conceived of the whole shebang. Starting as a two-day event, Summer Camp has grown into a four-day musical fiesta that brings together over a 100 bands from all over to play their hearts out on six different stages to throngs of attendees in excess of 15,000. However, the festival does not forget its inherent theme and incorporates a "family-friendly" area in the setting of the Kids Camp that has a plethora of fun-filled activities on offer, ranging from arts and crafts, face painting, music lessons, balloon artistry and jewelry making.

The seminal installment of the Summer Camp music festival brought together a sprinkling of then upcoming and veteran acts, such as jam rockers Moe and The Samples as well as jazz artists Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. The following year, Summer Camp saw many of the previous year's acts return to its stages such as Moe and ?koostik hookah as well as some new ones. The 2003 performances kept up the now trademark energy of Summer Camp and injected an after dark dose of musical mayhem in the form of the Red Barn performances, with future regulars Umphrey's McGee making the their debut appearance. 2004's showings saw the lineup almost double, with some 35 bands slamming it out over a three day jamboree.

The 2005 Summer Camp event upped the ante by expanding to its now staple four days of musical fervor and brought in a 40-band brigade to charge up the crowds. The 2006 happening kept on expanding the lineup, with some 45 bands, featuring the likes of Apollo Sunshine, The Lee Boys, Yonder Mountain String Band and Oteil and the Peacemakers unleashing a triple-stage assault. The 2007 phenomenon also witnessed the stages emerge in their own right, namely as the Moonshine Main Stage, Sunshine Stage and the Camping Stage. With 2008 reprising the previous year's musical manifestation, the 2009 became a force to be reckoned with, what with having more than five dozen acts show up, ranging from Willie Nelson and The Wood Brothers to Method Man, Redman and Bassnectar. The 2010 event didn't mince any music and unleashed a torrent of tunes from the likes of The Avett Brothers, Bassnectar and Pretty Lights. The 2011 event just went rampant with the musical mania that was spearheaded by Widespread Panic, Bassnectar, Wiz Khalifa, Skrillex, Gaelic Storm, with The Avett Brothers and Bela Fleck & The Flecktones bringing up the rear.

The organizers of the Summer Camp music festival project themselves as being acutely environmentally conscious after buying into the global warming phenomenon and hence have a standing arrangement with the Green Mountain Energy Company to offset their so-called carbon footprint. They also employ bio-diesel generators running on a 20% bio-diesel mix. The 2012 Summer Camp packs in a wallop of musical mash-up courtesy acts such as Jane's Addiction, Moe, Umphrey's McGee, Gigantic Underground Conspiracy and 12th Planet, with latter one possibly comprising of the first Annunaki visitors from Nibiru/Planet-X this time around.
