Straight No Chaser came together in 1996 in Indiana University as 10 students decided to form a cappella men’s singing group. Their interests were purely non-commercial and they performed to entertain only in college parties. Some of their performances inevitably found their way to YouTube, this sparked a phenomenon which saw Straight No Chaser conduct live concerts, nationwide tours, record studio albums and ultimately top the billboard charts.

Dan Ponce was the founder of Straight No Chaser and the other 9 original members were Randy Stine, Charlie Mechling, Walter Chase, Kevin Caroll, Steve Morgan, Dave Roberts, Mike Itkoff, Jerome Collins and Patrick Hachey. Some of these founder members left the group after graduating in 1999, but Straight No Chaser carried on by recruiting fresh talent which was mostly college students. Over the years this process continued as more students came and left the band. Since its inception, Straight No Chaser has had over 50 members, however there have never been more than 10 members at a time.

Straight No Chaser, or SNC as it is commonly known, is named after a 1967 song by Thelonious Monk. SNC released their first studio album in 2008, titled, “Holiday Spirits”. The album was an instant hit, becoming a best seller on iTunes and Amazon. Holiday Spirits was also a success on the Billboard charts and encouraged the band to continue recording. In 2009 they released their second album by the name of Christmas Cheers. The 15 track album enjoyed similar success as its predecessor, once again placing Straight No Chaser on the Billboard Charts. The album consisted of a number of hit numbers such as “We Three Kings”, “O Holy Night”, “I’ll be home for Christmas” and “Jingle Bells”.

It focused primarily on Christmas songs and fittingly earned 6 th place on the Top Holiday Albums Charts. Buoyed by the success of their first two albums, Straight No Chaser went on to record their third album which was released in 2010. The album was titled, “With a Twist” and proved to be the most successful release by SNC to date. It broke into Billboard’s top ten seasonal albums chart, once again featuring a number of classic holiday themed songs. However, not all songs in the album featured this theme, SNC ventured into doing cover songs of renowned rock bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay and Oasis. The result was a splendid rendition of modern rock, combined with the finesse of classical music. Fans everywhere loved the new approach by SNC and propelled them to stardom.

Though their albums have been highly successful, it is the extraordinary live performance that is the real strength of Straight No Chaser. The secret of their early success and fame was the captivating display that the 10 SNC members put on stage.
