By 1992, his health and personality were so much in jeopardy that he was arrested on firearms and drugs charges, and had to spend some time in jail. He could not perform for two years, and it was during his stay in jail that he was able to overcome his addiction. After being released, he worked on his music again, and released two albums during the next one and a half year. One of the two albums was even nominated for Grammy in the Best Contemporary Folk Album category. According to the critics, his personality as well as musical style has changed remarkably after his release from jail. He has now shown an increasing interest in bluegrass music as well as folk and rock music. There have been several movies that he has worked in, and he has been the subject of a documentary film that is based on his life.

Another important aspect of his life and career has been his political views. He has been a strong campaigner against landmines, and views against Vietnam and Iraq war have always drawn attention towards him. He has also been campaigning against death penalty. There have been controversies against him, with people accusing him of glorifying terrorism and terrorist, but he has always been clarifying his point of view as that of a person who hates violence, no matter who does it.
