In 1981, a campaign was launched to select a new name for the teams, and various suggestions were put forward. Among the most thoroughly considered names were included Robber Barons, Trees, Sequoias, Spikes, Railroaders, Griffins and Huns . The name Stanford Griffins was so much supported that the university management erected two statues of Griffin near the university’s sports facilities. Eventually, the athletic teams for the University of Stanford were named as Stanford Cardinal in 1981 by the school President Donald Kennedy . There is no official mascot for the Stanford Cardinal, but a mascot that is often seen at their home games cheering up the crowd is the Stanford Tree. It is a member of Stanford Band and wears a tree costume, looking similar to the El Palo Alto , the redwood tree that appears on official athletics logo as well as the official seal of the University.
