With its fast pace and immense athleticism, ice hockey has been one of the most exciting sports around – and talking of ice hockey, who doesn’t know St. Louis Blues! Based out of St. Louis, Missouri, the St. Louis Blues are a professional ice hockey franchise of the Western Conference (Central Division) of the esteemed National Hockey League (NHL). The team is interestingly name after W. C. Handy’s famous song “St. Louis Blues“.

The Blues came into being as a result of NHL expansion plan of 1967 which increased the number of teams from six to twelve. The team played its debut matches in 1967-68 season while the old St. Louis Arena served as team’s official home venue. The team was coached by Lynn Patrick who soon resigned and was subsequently replaced by Scotty Bowman. Even in the absence of any star player in the line-up, the St. Louis Blues managed to excel in the Western Division. Taking advantage of a playoff format, the Blues managed to make it to the final round in each of their first three seasons.

While the initial Blues teams was studded with aging veterans including Doug Harvey, Glenn Hall, Dickie Moore, and Jacques Plante, they still managed to perform well in the season 1968-69 with Glenn Hall and Jacques Plante winning Vezina Trophy. Phil Goyette won Lady Byng Trophy in 1970 while Red Berenson of New York Rangers became the team’s first major star. Following these individual successes, the St. Louis Arena became one of the most active and loudest venues in the NHL.

The Blues, however, couldn’t capitalize on their early successes of the late 1960s largely because of a new playoff format. The Blues lost a number of key team members in 1970s owing to internal conflicts which seriously hampered team’s development. The team made to its first playoffs in 1980 after 25 consecutive seasons. This improvement continued into 1981-82 with the season ending in 45 wins and 107 points, the second best record in the NHL. Despite remarkable successes earlier in the season, the team still couldn’t make it the playoffs for many years. In 1986, the St. Louis Blues were involved in Monday Night Miracle which saw one of the most furious comebacks in the history of NHL when the team reached the Campbell Conference Finals – The Blues, however, lost the final game. 1990-91 saw The Blues achieving the second-best regular-season record in NHL in 1990–91 but the Blues still couldn’t make it beyond the second round of the playoffs.

The St. Louis Blues have won Division Championship 7 times since 1967 and their only Presidents’ Trophy triumph came in 1999-2000. In over four decades of existence, the Blues have failed to secure any Conference Championships and Stanley Cups – one of the longest standing championship droughts in NHL. Various players of the team, however, have bagged numerous awards over the years including Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, Calder Memorial Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, Frank J. Selke Trophy, Hart Memorial Trophy, Jack Adams Award, James Norris Memorial Trophy, King Clancy Memorial Trophy, Lester B. Pearson Award and NHL Plus/Minus Award among others.

The Blues home since 1994 is Scottrade Center (Kiel Center) which has a seating capacity of 19,150. Before Scottrade Center, the team used to play in the St. Louis Arena which was demolished in 1999. Despite repeated failures, the St. Louis Blues remains a much followed team with an average attendance of 18,883 in 2009-10 season and 34 sold out games out of 40.Over the years, The Blues have come to be known for its tradition of playing an organ rendition of “St. Louis Blues” at the start of every period and singing “When the Saints Go Marching In” before every game. The Blues also has a long standing tradition of fan-produced programs which are sold outside the arena and often provide sarcastic and humorous renditions of team produced periodicals.

Despite being a promising and much followed outfit, the glory has continued to evade the St. Louis Blues. Having never won Stanley Cup, the Blues are honor-hungry and looking to push themselves for their first ever title run. With such an overwhelming desire to perform, St. Louis Blues are certainly a team to back. So get your St. Louis Blues tickets and cheer for this exciting team on its journey towards glory.

The Blues’ fans are anticipating an exciting season with some kicking performances from their favorite players. The team is all out for the most coveted Stanley Cup this season and their preseason games look promising. They have the spirits to show their true worth to the world out there. This is an open warning to all their rivals and there is nothing less to expect but a cutthroat fight. There will be some major action and excitement at the Scottrade Center.
