Date & Time

Folks its time for America’s national past time and that too in T-shirts and shorts! Can’t get any better then this or does it? If you are a major league baseball fan, you know what Spring Training means! It is time to doff your heavy jackets and head towards warm, sunny blue skies for the pre-season of baseball. Time to see your favorite players practice their skills before the regular season starts!

Spring Training coincides with college spring break and lasts for about six weeks (mid February to 1 st week of April). Pitchers and catchers usually show up first for the pre season, since they need a longer period to practice. They are followed by the position players, marking the beginning of the team practice. This momentous event started in 1920s. The initial teams to participate in this event were St. Louis Cardinals, the New York Yankees, the Chicago Cubs, the St. Louis Browns, and Pittsburg Pirates along with many other teams. The locations that these teams played at were Hot Springs, Arkansas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, New Orleans, Louisiana, Phoenix, Arizona, and Honolulu, Hawaii, to name a few. While all these great cities have hosted major league baseball teams, however, now only Florida and Arizona are home to Spring Training for all major league baseball teams. While the former state is home to the Grapefruit League, the later hosts Cactus League.

Both the Grapefruit League and the Cactus League consists of 15 teams each. While the former can boast of a heavyweight like the New York Yankees, the later, too, has its own heavyweights like the Texas Rangers and San Francisco Giants. An important historical fact about the Cactus League as narrated by Bill Veeck, former owner of Cleveland Indians, is that the League was started to avoid racism. Mr. Veeck signed up Larry Doby, who was the first African American to play for the American League and only the second to play major league baseball.

While Baseball remains the national pastime of America, it would be wrong to assume that it is only confined to America. Both the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees have trained in Cuba and the Dominican Republic in the late 1940’s. Japan too has its own professional baseball leagues’ teams which play all over Asia. The game has a worldwide following.

Spring Training is all about what America stands for: hard work while having fun. And if the fun is under the clear blue skies of Florida or sunny Arizona, what could be better! While it provides you entertainment, it also gives you a sneak peek into the future of your favorite team. It’s a winning combination folks so get your Spring Training tickets today.
