Formed in the year 1978 in Fullerton, California, United States, Social Distortion began as a project of Mike Ness, who was no more than 17 years old at the time of the group’s formation. After getting together with the rest of the group members, he started performing in several punk venues in Los Angeles, California. The year 1981 saw the release of their first single, Mainliner, which was issued by Posh Boy, a local recording label. Following this, the band headed straight to an extensive tour of the continent, where they gave appearances at numerous venues. After the tour, they began to work on their debut album, which was released under the title of Mommy’s Little Monster. The record went on to become a major success, and received critical acclaim in the genre of punk music. Following the release of the album, the group underwent a down period because of Mike Ness’s drug addiction. Ness managed to get over his addiction in the next five years however, and the band regrouped once again, announcing their rebound through Prison Bound
After getting back together, Social Distortion left their old recording company to sign with Epic Records. Their debut release with Epic Records occurred in the year 1990 when thet released an album named Social Distortion, which turned out to be the highlight of their career, getting a gold status by the RIAA and reaching the Billboard Top 200. The two singles from the album, Let It Be Me and Ball and Chain both cracked the Modern Rock chart, with the former reaching the first place on the chart and the latter achieving the thirteenth spot. The band embarked on a series of concerts after the release of one of their most successful albums to date, performing for sold out crowds all over the country with artists such as Neil Young.
Social Distortion issued their next record in the year 1992. The album was titled Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell. This too became an instantaneous hit, and produced several popular tracks such as Cold Feelings, When She Begins, Bad Luck and many more as well. The group again went through a break before releasing their next record, which was named White Light White Heat White Trash. The record gave them even more exposure, and gained them international fame, going on to be placed on the 27 th spot on the Billboard Top 200 chart. Soon afterward, they issued a single titled When the Angels Sing. The track was placed on the 40 th place on the Modern Rock chart and the Mainstream Rock Tracks list.
The music of Social Distortion is greatly influenced by artists such as Ramones, The Clash, the Sex Pistols, the Rolling Stones, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash and many more as well. Several contemporary musicians also take great inspiration from the band, including Thrice, Rancid, Superman Is Dead, the Avenged Sevenfold, The Offspring, Rise Against, Pearl Jam, Alkaline, among countless others. Mike Ness writes most of the lyrics of the group, and their songs always revolve around a basic theme of maturity, hard struggle, impulsiveness and the aftermath of such decisions. Their music is a treat to listen to, and their live performances are even more enjoyable. Experience the magic of their performance at their latest concerts with your Social Distortion tickets and have the best punk music experience of a lifetime!
