It seems that on Broadway these days, just about every tried and tested story will be rehashed into a musical to keep the wheels of the industry spinning and the audiences coming. The latest case in point is Sister Act that takes its name as well as most of its script from its namesake 1992 flick starring Whoopi Goldberg. Lacing it will all the feel-good and essentially elated vibes that typified the eponymous film, the Sister Act musical takes the inanity an extra mile further and packs in copious disco numbers and 60s style R&B vibes to stage a musical ritual as if to the Babylonia Queen Semiramis herself.

However, the Sister Act musical has been shrewdly entrenched in an ecclesiastical setting, complete with emblazoned crosses on shimmering habits adorning dancing nuns that have taken upon themselves to raise the roof. Experience a bevy of dancing nuns serenade you with their gospel and disco laden outpourings by getting your Sister Act tickets.

Set in the 1970s, Sister Act tells the story of the wannabe disco superstar Deloris Van Cartier who falls for the wrong guy, Curtis, despite his gangster and very married persona, and eventually finds herself all wrapped up in his mobster ways. She inadvertently witnesses a murder and thus must put her disco dancing aspirations on the back burner and try to get away with her behind intact. It turns out that instead of a standard witness protection program, there is no better place to conceal her than the local convent that not only sans the sequined and flashy apparel that Deloris is so used to but also the funds to run their priestly operations. However, Deloris takes it upon herself to breathe new life in to its austere orderliness and starts working with the resident choir, though not without blowing her cover in the process.

Sister Act premiered at the Pasadena Playhouse on October 24th 2006 and closed after an eight-week run. The musical was a surprise hit, grossing over a million dollars and becoming the most lucrative show for the venue, making it a shoo in for a Broadway debut. However, the musical producers opted to move it the Alliance Theater where it underwent a five-week run in early 2007. However, Sister Act started to get some major billing when it opened on West End in June 2009 at the London Palladium and cast Patina Miller in the lead role of Deloris. Though Sheila Hancock essentially wore the mantle of Mother Superior, it was handed over to the progenitor Whoopi Goldberg for a few performances. Sister Act opened on Broadway in April 2011, with Patina Miller reprising her role of Deloris. However, in April 20212, Raven-Symoné of That's so Raven and The Cheetah Girls fame stepped into the disco dancing shoes of Delores.

Primarily penned by the husband and wife duo of Cherie and Bill Steinkellner and with Douglas Carter Beane contributing additional book material, the Sister Act musical was structured around the lyrics of Glenn Slater and the formulaic music of the Grammy and Oscar winning Alan Menken. After the initial runs in Pasadena and Atlanta, the West End production of Sister Act was brought forth by Stage Entertainment, with Whoopi Goldberg and Michael Reno from Sis Acts LLC acting as co-producers. In the spate of the critical reviews, frequent comparisons have been made with the other seemingly divinely inspired musical The Book of Mormon, with the former being considered more though provoking, despite the overtly risqué piques and the religious freaks and Sister Act being deemed as a moderately engaging family friendly oddity.

In the awards department Sister Act seems to have fallen flat. Though garnering a quartet of Laurence Olivier Award nominations including Best Musical for its West End production as well as a quintet of Tony Award nominations matched by five Drama Desk ones, including Best Musical and Outstanding Musical respectively, Sister Act could only snag a Theater World Award. Be a witness to some bubbling jubilations and groovy gyrations by nabbing some Sister Act tickets now.
