San Jose Sharks – A Little History

The San Jose Sharks were formed as an expansion team in 1991 as part of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was created as part of the league’s efforts to expand into non-traditional markets, with San Jose being the first major league professional sports franchise in Northern California.

The Sharks played their first game on October 4, 1991, against the Vancouver Canucks and lost 4-3. The team’s name was chosen through a fan contest, with “Sharks” being selected as a nod to the large number of shark sightings in the San Francisco Bay Area.
