Hagar belongs to California and he was born in the city of Salinas in 1947 as Sam Roy Hagar. After graduating Hagar decided to pursue a career in music and initially worked with underground bands like Fabulous Castilles, Johnny Fortune Band and Justice Brothers. Sammy Hagar got prominence when he joined the band of famous rock guitarist Ronnie Montrose, the group was called Montrose. He worked with Montrose on two albums Namely Montrose (1973) and Paper Money (1974) , the first album landed at #133 on US Charts and went Platinum whereas the second went to #65 on US Charts. Hagar left Montrose citing differences with Ronnie after these two albums.
Sammy Hagar then went on to pursue a successful solo career from 1976 till 1984, during this time he released eight studio albums which all charted in US Charts but out of these three albums namely Three Lock Box was certified Gold whereas Standing Hampton and VOA were certified Platinum. Phenomenal success came to Sammy Hagar when he joined the acclaimed rock group Van Halen in 1985. This group included superb guitar player Eddie Van Halen who is termed as the most talented and influential rock guitarist of 20 th century. Hagar along with Van Halen released 5150 in 1986, it got amazing reviews went 5x Platinum. 5150 raced to the top slot on US Charts.
In the year 1988 OU812 was released, this was yet another superb album by Van Halen with powerful vocals of Hagar. The album topped US Charts and was certified 4x Platinum. The bands popularity was increasing exponentially and with this came two more #1 chart topping hit albums For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991) and Balance (1995) , both went 3x Platinum. Hagar departed from Van Halen after this and released two more studio albums in 1997 and 2008 namely Marching To Mars (#18 on US Charts) and Cosmic Universal Fashion ( #95 on US Charts). Apart from doing solo work Hagar has also made a back band called The Waboritas which consists of bassist Mona Gnader, guitarist Vic Johnson and drummer David Lauser. The Waboritas group has released four studio albums out of which the most successful effort is Red Voodoo , released in 1999 by music giants MCA Records this album landed at #22 on US Charts.
In the year 2008 Hagar joined a super rock group named Chickenfoot, this band includes renowned musicians like rock guitarist Joe Satriani, ex-bassist of Van Halen Michael Anthony and drummer from Red Hot Chili Peppers Chad Smith. Chickenfoot has released one self-titled album in 2009, this album got good reviews, earned a Gold certification in US and Canada and landed at #4 on US Charts. While with Van Halen, Hagar also did eight singles that went to the #1 position on US Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks, some of the singles were “Black and Blue”, “Poundcake”, “Runaround”, “Humans Being” and “Don’t Tell Me (What Love Can Do)”.
