Fronted by the renowned British Nigerian singer and songwriter Sade Adu, Sade the band has been enjoying significant amount of success ever since its formation in 1983. The band’s music comprises of the elements of various genres like Jazz, Funk, Soft Rock, and R&B. Sade rose to instant success soon after the release of the band’s debut album titled Diamond Life. The album led the band to their first Grammy Award win later that year and also managed to get the Gold Status for its enormous amount of sales. The origin of the band can be traced back to 1982 when Sade Adu along with Paul Spencer Denman, Paul Anthony Cook and Stuart Matthewman started writing their own material as a breakaway group. During that period all three were a part of a band called Pride. Later on the band’s lineup saw the addition of Andrew Hale and also the departure of Cook later in 1984. The band decided to name itself after the lead vocalist of the band, and made their debut with a performance in London at the Ronnie Scott’s Club. After receiving much attention from media and fans, the band parted ways from Pride and struck a record deal with Portrait Records.

Sade made its studio debut with a single titled Your Love is King which was later followed by the release of their debut album called Diamond Life that surfaced on market on July 28, 1984. The album was a huge success in UK and proved to be a perfect launching pad for the band for its future endeavors. Moreover, the album also peaked at the #2 spot on the Singles Chart and earned 4x Platinum status. The band widened its horizons by releasing its debut U.S single titled Hang on to Your Love which was followed by their debut album as well. Promise was Sade’s second studio release that came out in 1985 both in UK and US. In UK, the album debuted and peaked at #1 spot on the singles chart while in U.S Sade Adu received a nomination for American Music Awards. In 1985, the band embarked on its first world tour.

Band’s third studio album surfaced on May 14, 1988 and it was titled Stronger Than Pride. Peaking at #3 spot in UK, the album also received platinum status in UK, and the release was followed by yet another world tour. The album further rooted them as a success mainstream band. Love Deluxe was band’s fourth studio release that came out in 1992 both in UK and US. Unlike all of their previous releases, Love Deluxe was more critically acclaimed in US than it was in UK. To help promote their album, the band embarked on another one of the world tours. The band claimed a Grammy Award for the song No Ordinary Love for the Category of Best R&B Performance by a Dou or a Group. In mid 90s the band went on a brief hiatus as Matthewman, Hale and Denman started their own side project. The band got together once again and performed together at the MOBO Awards. After the comeback, the band released its yet another studio album titled Lovers Rock that also helped the band to claim a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album.

The most recent album by the band came out almost after a decade on February 8, 2010 by the title of Soldier of Love.
