Rufus Wainwright is an American Canadian baroque pop artist from Montreal who has been active in the world of music since 1993. Since then, he has gone on to reign supreme over the baroque pop and operatic pop music scene. He is a singer, a songwriter and a musician who plays the guitar and the piano. Born in New York to two folk singers, Rufus Wainwright went to live in Montreal a the age of three where he grew up. Due to his mother being Canadian and his father American, he gained dual Canadian and US citizenship. He came back to the US to study at the Millbrook School in New York City and then went on to study at the McGill University in Montreal, Canada. By the age of six, he had begun playing the piano and at the age of thirteen, he toured alongside his mother, sister and aunt as The McGarrigle Sisters and Family, a folk music group. At the age of fourteen, he wrote a song titled as I’m a-Runnin and went on to perform it for the famous movie, Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller. This ended up earning him a Genie Award nomination for the Best Original Song and a Juno Award nomination for the Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year.
 
Soon after, Rufus Wainwright grew fond of the opera and operatic music, particularly the works of Judy Garland, Edith Piaf and Al Jolson. He then began performing weekly shows at venues such as the Café Sarajevo and as part of the Montreal club ciruit. With Pierre Marchand as his producer, he recorded a number of demo tapes which were then passed on by his father to a DreamWorks executive. He was then signed onto DreamWorks Records. In 1996, he moved to New York City and began performing regularly at the Club Fez. In 1998, he released his first self-titled album which was then ranked as one of the Best Albums of the Year by Rolling Stone which also awarded the signed as the Best New Artist of the Year. He also won four American Music Award nominations, a GLAAD Media Award for the Outstanding Music Album and even a Juno Album for having the Best Alternative Album. In 1998, Rufus Wainwright toured alongside Sean Lennon and started his first headline tour, starring in a Gap commercial as well. For the next three years, he went on tour with the likes of Guster, Tori Amos, Ben Folds and Sting. In 2003, he released the albums Want One and then the album Want Two in 2004.
