Built in 1929, Royce Hall was modeled after Sant’Ambrogio Church in Milan, Italy. This state-of-the-art theater was named after Josiah Royce, a leading philosopher of the time; it is an architectural landmark of UCLA. The building was magnificently designed by architect David Allison and over time, it has been host to a wide variety of world-renowned public figures and artists including Albert Einstein, John F. Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt, Paul Robeson, Isaac Stern, Mrs. W.E.B. Dubois, Ravi Shankar, Alicia Alonso, Gene Kelly, Joan Baez, Frank Zappa. The auditorium comprises of 1,833 seats and houses an antique pipe organ.
