Richmond Coliseum is an arena in Richmond, Virginia where the Richmond Renegades and the Richmond Bandits play. It is also the venue for various large concerts. The arena opened in 1971 and holds 13,500 people. Easily accessible to Interstates 95 and 64, the arena attracts visitors from across the Central Virginia region and beyond. A small fire occurred there in 1997, shutting it down for repairs.
Central Virginia’s largest sports venue, the Coliseum is the larger attraction of the Richmond Civic Center. Visible from I-64, it takes on the shape of a “spaceship” with its disk-like appearance. The Richmond Renegades and the local arena football call the Coliseum home. The area’s largest entertainment events (concerts, performances) are usually held inside the Coliseum as well.
The Richmond Coliseum was also the former home of the American Basketball Association (1967-1976) professional basketball franchise Virginia Squires. The Squires played there (in addition to the Roanoke Civic Center, Norfolk Scope and Hampton Coliseum; all within the state of Virginia) from 1971 to 1976.
The Colonial Athletic Association men’s and women’s (NCAA) collegiate basketball tournament has been contested at the Richmond Coliseum, since 1990. On March 1, 2006 a deal was signed to keep the tournament in Richmond until 2012.
The superb Richmond Coliseum was the largest sports arena in Virginia before the opening of the Until John Paul Jones Arena in 2006. The Virginia Commonwealth University Rams, men’s basketball team, used to play there until the 7,500-seat Stuart C. Siegel Center on the VCU campus, opened in 1999. With a seating capacity of 13,000, the Richmond Coliseum is the frequent site of conference and NCAA basketball tournaments. The Renegades of the Southern Professional Hockey League play at the Coliseum. The circus, ice shows, pro-wrestling, and major recording artists are among the activities that fill the Coliseum’s busy schedule. The Richmond Coliseum is one of the largest entertainment facilities in the state.
The Coliseum also serves as the home for the NCAA basketball conference tournaments for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
It hosted the 15th WWF In Your House pay-per-view in 1997 and will host WWE Armageddon in December 2006. The Richmond Coliseum will also be the location of the Dancing with the Stars tour in Richmond on January 30, 2007.
