Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of the most well-established American orchestras, with Heinz Hall designated as its home orchestra, which is located in the Cultural District of Pittsburgh.  The Orchestra’s mission is to provide such a musical experience, which shows a high degree of expression that seeks to culturally enrich the community while at the same time delivers the audiences’ needs. In 1895, the Pittsburgh Arts Society alongside conductor Frederic Archer sought to establish an orchestra, which is today known as Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Archer was a British conductor, organist and composer, who had taken formal musical education in Leipzig and London, and had the experience of holding musical positions in Scotland and England.  He was later made the conductor of Massachusetts Oratorio Society, while also being appointed the director of Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Music Hall. In fact, the man is known to have founded The Keynote in1885, which he edited for some time, while alongside publishing many books and organ compositions. Thus Archer joined the PSO with ample experience, and brought several musicians with him from Boston Symphony Orchestra, leading the PSO to its very first concert the next year.  

In 1898, Archer left the orchestra, and his place was given to Victor Herbert, a cellist, composer and conductor. At the time when he was chosen to lead the orchestra, Herbert was completely involved in making popular music, and was famous as an artist of the theater, who had composed many comic operas.  Herbert took Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on many tours and his presence contributed to the popularity of the orchestra’s name. In 1904, however, Herbert’s position was given to Emil Paur. During its initial years the orchestra saw several renowned guest conductors such as Richard Strauss and Edward Elgar, but was temporarily dissolved in 1910 due to financial problems.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra features special performances to keep in touch with the community, and to deliver timely entertainment requirements during the holiday seasons or according to seasonal traditions. By 1937, Otto Klemperer entered the PSO team, reorganizing the orchestra and bringing it to the international front.  The orchestra has since been experiencing continued development and growth.
