The American band Pearl Jam was formed in Seattle, Washington in 1990 and they have successfully carved their name in the world of Rock Music. The band has released many albums and gained popularity over the last two decades and has numerous hit songs. Today, the band has sold over thirty million records on the US soil alone. Jeff Ament, the bands bass guitarist and Stone Gossard, the rhythm guitarist were previously part of a band called Mother Love Bone. After Mother Love Bone disbanded, the two joined Pearl Jam. Other than Ament and Gossard, the lineup of Pearl Jam includes Eddie Vedder as the vocalist and guitarist, Mike McCready as lead guitarist and Matt Cameron as the drummer. Cameron previously played for Sound Garden.

The debut album Ten was recorded in the London Bridge Studios in 1991. According to the band, the album had taken a greater influence from Stone and Jeff, who were together in a band before as well. ‘Ten’ was named after a players Jersey number. The album had eleven tracks and had a classic rock touch to it. After its release in August of 1991, the album started selling slowly. So the start was not very bright but eventually the sales rose and by the end of 1992 it was certified gold and had reached two on the Billboard Charts. The hit singles from the album were ‘ Alive’, ‘Even Flow’ and ‘Jeremy’. ‘ Alive’ can be said to have gained the most success and is still heard today by rock fans across the world. The album had a very dark subject and the songs dealt with matters like depression, loneliness and solitude, suicide and murder. Ten stayed on the charts for over two years and is one of the highest selling rock records ever, certified 13x platinum.

The success of Ten meant that Pearl Jam was considered to be amongst the famous bands that were part of the grunge explosion, like Alive in Chains, Nirvana and Soundgarden . Extensive touring after the release of the album made sure that the band was seen by alternative rock fans all over the US.

After the release of Ten and the successful entrance of the band into the mainstream, they released several other albums over the next decade. Vs. was released in 1993 which was followed immediately by Vitalogy in 1994. The Albums No Code and Yield were released in 1996 and 1998 respectively. No Code, which came out five years after the debut album, was a little different from the bands original sound. The album’s lyrics were focused more on self examination and were said to be, in a way, about growing up, according to Ament . The album debuted at the top of the Billboard but fell down very quickly. The band couldn’t tour as much as they would have liked due to issues with their ticket prices. The album Yield was the bands fifth album and Ament stated that it was perhaps the most united effort by the band and it was album where every member of the band had a little bit of their say. This made everyone feel like an integral part of the band. The band chose to stick to their original sound for this album. A documentary was also made about the making of the album and released on DVD and VHS. This is when Pearl Jam changed their drummer and Matt Cameron from ‘Soundgarden’ joined them and at first he was a temporary replacement but he became a permanent member later on. The band started their touring once again. After the 1998 tour, the band released a live album titled Live on Two Legs .

The band continued their success and the albums Binaural, Riot Act and Pearl Jam were released in 2000, 2002 and 2006. Their most recent release is Backspacer in 2009.

In March of 2011 Pearl Jam told media that they had about twenty five songs ready to be recorded and they were to start in April.
