Opera Colorado is the name of an opera company that is based in Denver, Colorado. It is a member of the OPERA America. It was established in 1981 by the duo, Nathaniel Merrill and his wife Louise Sherman. This team of husband and wife had come from New York City where they had flourishing careers at the Metropolitan Opera. In fact, Merrill was an operatic and stage director for the Met for twenty-eight seasons. During his time he had directed fourteen productions along with several revivals. Sherman was a conductor at the Met. They came to Denver to promote opera but there were no suitable venues for such productions. The only place where such performances were held was at the Denver Center for Performing Arts’ Boettcher Hall. As a result, they built Opera Colorado whose performances are primarily held at the Elli Caulkins Opera House since 2005.
Many great international stars have performed for Opera Colorado since its inception. Its first season was held in 1983, two years after its formation. Performances that year brought Plácido Domingo, James McCracken, Pilar Lorengar and Catherine Malfitano to Denver. In subsequent years, the company staged performances of global stars like Samuel Ramey, Justino Diaz, Cornell MacNeil, Eva Marton, James Morris and Sherrill Milnes. The company strove to be the best. Their commitment to present the highest quality of live operatic concerts reinforced itself when they appointed James Robinson as the company’s Art Director in the year 2000.

Robinson’s reputation in the field of opera is flawless. He has worked for many prestigious opera houses like Opera Ireland, Santa Fe Opera, New York City Opera, Los Angeles Opera and Houston Grand Opera. Another addition to the team of the company was made in 2001 when Peter Russell became the new President and General Director. Peter Russell was the leader of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Program . He also worked as the Director of the Virginian company called the Wolf Trap Opera Company. Both of them worked hard to give Opera Colorado a new direction and a new face. It was during this reconfiguration that the company moved its venue to Elli Caulkins Opera House. As a consequence, their donor base widened, number of subscribers increased and they started collaborating with other companies on a number of productions.

Robinson and Russell left the company in 2007. Greg Carpenter replaced Russell as the General Director. Under Carpenter’s direction, Opera Colorado celebrated its silver jubilee in 2007-08. It was a gala of performances by Patti Lupone, La traviate by Verdi, Don Pasquale by Donizetti and The Flying Dutchman by Wagner. For its twenty-five years of excellence, the company was presented with the Downtown Denver Partnership Award in 2009. Carpenter received the Livingston Fellowship that same year for his work at the company. Another distinction to its name is that it staged the first Hoffmann production in a quarter of a century in 2009-10. The production was titled The Tales of Hoffmann . It was produced in collaboration with Boston Lyric Opera and Opera Theatre of St. Louis.
This season, Opera Colorado is coming up with an eclectic mix of great performances. From humorous to soul-stirring, the productions will be carrying a plethora of human emotions. There are a total of three presentations. The first is Marriage of Figaro which will show rife on a wedding day that is filled with comic madness carried to the audience by Mozart’s perfect melodies. The second is the Florencia en el Amazonas by Daniel Catan. It will relate the journey of passion and desire into the exotic Amazon forest. The third is Il Trovatore , one of the most amazing works by Guiseppe Verdi. It will grip you in its maze of suspense and leave you speechless with its twists and turns.
These esteemed works by great artists will be made ten times more entertaining by Opera Colorado. Get your Opera Colorado tickets and live some of the most memorable moments of your life!
