In 1961 the franchise started playing as Tidewater Tides, a famous newspaper The Virginia-Pilot ran a contest for the team’s new name, chosen name was “Mariners” but previous name was retained. When the Cardinals left Virginia there was a threat that minor-league baseball future will be in danger but in 1969 New York Mets moved their Triple-A International League affiliate the Jacksonville Suns, this team took up the Tides name and kept on playing under the previous owners.

In 1987 they had the league best regular season record but were defeated in the playoffs. From 1969 till 1992 Tides played all their home games at the Met Park but in 1993 they finally moved to the very large Harbor Park which has a capacity to seat over 12000 spectators, the team was sold to entrepreneur Ken Young. The name was changed to Norfolk for some major reasons and a mascot was introduced called the Rip Tide. The relationship of Norfolk Tides and New York Mets ended in 2006 after a 38-year association which is in fact the second longest running partnership after Richmond Braves and Atlanta Braves.

The Tides played the championship series 9 times, in 1971 they lost to Rochester Red Wings, 1972 they beat the Louisville Bats, 1975 they defeated Syracuse SkyChiefs. In 1982 they beat their old rival Rochester Red Wings followed by defeating Richmond Braves and Columbus Clippers in 1983 and 85 respectively. After that Norfolk Tides played three more champion series losing to Columbus Clippers in 1987, to Rochester Red Wings in 1988 and Ottawa Lynx in 1995.
