Jazz music has a timeless and widespread appeal. Over the decades, it seems to have transcended race boundaries and social strata and engulfed all in its eclectic compositions. The work of brothers Ira and George Gershwin has featured heavily in various movies and stage musicals, besides embellishing the repertories of a pantheon of musical acts ranging from Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald to Frank Sinatra, Natalie Cole and Sting. Their composition, Nice Work if You Can Get It, penned by Ira and with George writing the music, was first featured the 1937 film A Damsel in Distress and was famously danced to by Fred Astaire. The song itself has been rerecorded several times and has multiple covers sung by some of the most notable voices in music over the decades, namely Billie Holiday in 1944, Frank Sinatra in 1957 and Ella Fitzgerald in 1959. You will surely feel like having done some "nice work" after getting some Nice Work if You Can Get It tickets.

Before Hugh Hefner became the quintessential playboy by wallowing in the wealth generated by the eponymous magazine and label, Jimmy Winter was a hip and happening playboy and luxuriated in his wealth and charm, albeit in the fictional setting of Nice Work if You Can Get It. Like a typical playboy, he had been married a couple of times. However, just before his fourth or fifth (one can't be exactly sure with these playboys) wedding to one Eileen Evergreen, he meets a rough and tough female bootlegger that goes by the name of Billie Bendix. Eileen is a high maintenance and self-indulgent nouveau dancer (at the time of course), yet her family is very pro prohibition. Billie and her bootlegging coterie somehow get it into their head that they can hide crates of booze in the basement of the Long Island mansion of Jimmy under the assumption that he and his wife-to-be would be away for some days. But they find themselves in quite a bit of a pickle when not only the soon-to-be newlyweds, but also Eileen's anti-alcohol family, arrive at the mansion. However, Billie and her cronies start posing as the hired help, though not without unleashing copious revelry.

Nice Work if You Can Get It was borne out of the material produced by Joe DiPietro that itself was based on the combined works of the Anglo-American playwright Guy Bolton as well as the English humorist P.G. Wodehouse. However, it experienced a past life in the form of the musical They All Laughed! that opened at the Goodspeed Opera House in 2001 and was directed by Christopher Ashley, based on DiPetro's work. Though Nice Work if You Can Get It was slated for a December 2008 premier at Boston's Colonial Theatre, with a Broadway debut in the following spring, it was pushed back due to a spat between the manager and agent of the lead actor Harry Connick, Jr. The musical finally premiered at Broadway's Imperial Theatre in March 2012.

Though the musical Nice Work if You Can Get It is seeing the light of day in 2012, its creative legacy is embellished with accolades and notable names. DiPietro has a pair of Tony Awards to his credit, namely one for "Best Original Score Written for the Theatre" as well as "Best Book of a Musical," both for the musical Memphis that he received in 2010. An "Outstanding New Score" award from the Outer Critics Circle in 2010 rounds up the trio trove of appreciatory achievements. He was also nominated by The Drama League for "Distinguished Production of a Musical" as well as for an "Outstanding Book of a Musical" Drama Desk Award for Memphis in 2010. Mathew Broderick, who plays the lead Jimmy, is no stranger to the stage and has acted in several Tony Award-winning productions such as The Producers, Brighton Beach Memoirs and How to Succeed in Business. His scintillating Hollywood career is spread across three decades and entails films such as Ladyhawke, Godzilla and Project X.

Despite the impending doom of the Depression Era that itself was simmering due to the artificial boom of the Roaring Twenties, the creative team of Nice Work if You Can Get It has injected the musical with a feel-good theme that weaves in over-the-top dance numbers with popular Jazz music courtesy the Gershwin brothers. So grab hold of some Nice Work if You Can Get It tickets now to witness some boozing and bamboozling steeped in jazzy prancing.
