Before Hugh Hefner became the quintessential playboy by wallowing in the wealth generated by the eponymous magazine and label, Jimmy Winter was a hip and happening playboy and luxuriated in his wealth and charm, albeit in the fictional setting of Nice Work if You Can Get It. Like a typical playboy, he had been married a couple of times. However, just before his fourth or fifth (one can't be exactly sure with these playboys) wedding to one Eileen Evergreen, he meets a rough and tough female bootlegger that goes by the name of Billie Bendix. Eileen is a high maintenance and self-indulgent nouveau dancer (at the time of course), yet her family is very pro prohibition. Billie and her bootlegging coterie somehow get it into their head that they can hide crates of booze in the basement of the Long Island mansion of Jimmy under the assumption that he and his wife-to-be would be away for some days. But they find themselves in quite a bit of a pickle when not only the soon-to-be newlyweds, but also Eileen's anti-alcohol family, arrive at the mansion. However, Billie and her cronies start posing as the hired help, though not without unleashing copious revelry.
 
Nice Work if You Can Get It was borne out of the material produced by Joe DiPietro that itself was based on the combined works of the Anglo-American playwright Guy Bolton as well as the English humorist P.G. Wodehouse. However, it experienced a past life in the form of the musical They All Laughed! that opened at the Goodspeed Opera House in 2001 and was directed by Christopher Ashley, based on DiPetro's work.
