Throughout the history of print journalism, newspaper reporters have been looked upon as crusaders of truth, braving wars and natural and climatic catastrophes in order to get to the bottom of the matter. Using the backdrop of the hard street life of the Newsies of New York City and the aftermath of the Spanish-American War of 1898, Newsies the Musical weaves the budding romance between the protagonists Jack “Cowboy” Kelly, a de facto leader of the Newsies, and Katherine an ambitious reporter who oozes effervescent charm. Only 17 years old, Jack has garnered considerable experience on the streets of New York and leads his pack of Newsies in desperately selling every last one of their 100 newspaper copies each on a daily basis.

This unfortunate situation arises as the publisher would not accept back unsold copies. This dire state of affairs prompts the Newsies to spice up the deadlines as much as possible by preceding them with their trademark pitch of “Extra! Extra! Read all about it!” To make matters worse, they are constantly hounded by the local cops, with one of them getting on the tail of brothers David and LEs Jacob, chasing them into Irving Hall where the brothers run into the vaudeville star Medda Larkson who goes by the name of Swedish Meadowlark. Knowing that the Newsies are only given bundles of 100 newspapers and no less and they have to sell every last or incur direct loss out of their own pocket, publisher Pulitzer increases the bundle’s price from 50 to 60 cents during the war due to the increased demand for news from the warfront and does not revert it when it’s over. Subsequently, the Newsboys Strike of 1899 ensues, and the Newsies are able to use their combined duress and the help of newspaper reporter Katherine in having Pulitzer agree to take back unsold copies.

Basing its plot on its namesake 1992 Disney film, Newsies the Musical opened at Millburn’s Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey in September, 2011 and ran for around four weeks. Newsies the Musical had a Broadway premier on 15th March this year and has been slated for an initial run till August, 2012. Disney is apparently keeping its fingers crossed this time around, having kept a production budget at a low of $ 5 million as compared to the Little Mermaid‘s $ 15 million and Tarzan‘s $ 14 million.

Newsies the Musical has been directed by Jeff Calhoun, who has a Tony Award for ‘Honor for Excellence in Theatre’ to his credit that he received in 2004 for working on Big River, with the book penned by two-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein, receiving his awards for Torch Song Trilogy and La Cage aux Folles respectively.
