Everyone has heard of the classic story of My Fair Lady which is an exciting, hilarious and romantically light musical based on the play called Pygmalion written by the multi talented genius George Bernard Shaw. The musical’s book and lyrics are put together by Alan Jay Lerner, the brilliant American librettist and lyricist, who is famous for having produced some of the most beautiful and long running pieces for musical theatre. To make the musical an even more enduring theatrical production, its music has been composed by the Austrian-American, Frederick Loewe who generously collaborated with Jay Lerner in order to create the breathtakingly wonderful musical set of My Fair Lady. Owing to the joint effort of these super talented artists, My Fair Lady tickets have been the talk of town every time the show is in the running.

Efforts had been made since as early as the mid 1930s to convert Shaw’s Pygmalion into a musical but owing to the challenges confronted in the process, it could not be done for quite some time. Loewe and Lerner were adamant in creating the musical version of the play and after sometime of hard work, the two succeeded while also finally being granted the right to do so. They worked on the project for five months, during which time they brought in technical designers and began making casting calls for the show and in the meantime decided to call the production My Fair Lady. The script of this all time favorite musical included a few scenes originally from the version Bernard Shaw has created for Pygmalion’s 1938 film. The story of Pygmalion was not as remotely romantic as the musical it inspired. The romance and sweet tinkles that this show is so loved for were incorporated in the musical by the joint efforts of Loewe and Lerner.

The story of My Fair Lady centers on Eliza Doolittle, a flower girl who cannot speak the ‘right’ English, unaware that she can neither pronounce her words correctly nor use the correct grammar. Incidentally she runs into a very proper English man, Henry Higgins who points out this shortcoming and expresses his concern over why so many English people are unable to speak the language as it should be spoken. He tells Eliza that he studies phonetics and can easily identify a person’s background given how they speak. He offers to teach Eliza the many valuable lessons that she needs to become a ‘lady’ and assures her that if she accepts his offer she will be completely changed in the short period of six months. Eliza accepts the offer more because she is impressed by the man’s financial well-being that assures the ‘proper’ and ‘comfortable’ life. And so begins Henry Higgins’s noble undertaking to train his pupil so well that the other proper English speaking people from high society consider her to be one of them.

My Fair Lady was produced on Broadway for the very first time in 1956 and was instantly well received making My Fair Lady tickets the top favorite opportunity for theater-goers back then. The show set a record for being the longest running production in the history of theater for that time, following which a very successful production was staged in London, which was then followed by the making of the film in 1964. The musical has been much loved by the audiences, who along with theater critics have referred to it as the perfect musical. This musical has been revived many times since its 1956 staging, including the 1958 production in the West End. It was revived on Broadway in 1976, 1981 and in 1993, and was revived on the West End in 1979 and 2001. In 2005 the musical’s production took a tour in the UK, which ended in 2006, while in 2007 the show was produced again in the version of a Broadway concert. The same year the production went on touring in the United States.
