David Rader and Mile Makuson are Co-OC’s and Tyrone Nix is the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. The home stadium of the team is Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and the field is Hollingsworth Field built in 1915. The stadium is situated in Oxford Mississippi while it can sustain the capacity of 60,580 people; though the largest crowd was noted on October 10, 2009 in the game verses Alabama when the crowd reached 62,663 occupants. The colours of their uniform are Yale Blue and Harvard Crimson and their outfitter is Nike, while their official fight song is ‘Forward Rebels’ the unofficial song is ‘Dixie’. Their mascot is ‘Col. Rebels’ & ‘Rebel Black Bear’ and their marching band is ‘Pride of the South’. Their strong rivals are Mississippi State Bulldogs, LSU Tigers and Arkansas Razorbacks.
The league they belong to is NCAA Division I and the conference they have been the part of its, SEC since the year 1932 till present. Since 1992 they have been playing from the Western Division. The conferences they have been part of in the past are Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1899 to 1920 and Southern Conference from 1921 to 1932. They claimed three national titles in the year 1959, 1960 and 1962, while they won six conference titles in 1947, 1954, 1955, 1960, 1962 and 1963. They also won a division title in the year 2003.
The history states that under the guidance of Dr. A.L. Bondurant, Ole Miss Graduate School formed their first football team in the year 1893. In the debutant year of the team they won five games. In 1894 C.D. Clark was opted as the coach of the team. Though twice, in 1897 due to yellow fever epidemic and in 1943due to World War II, the team did not play any game.
Mississippi Rebels football made their hometown proud while achieving a number of milestones. As on October 29, 1904 Mississippi Rebels football won a game against Union College by defeating them with 114-0. 114 are the highest score ever made by Rebels. They became the first team in 1937 that flied to a game from Memphis, Tennessee to Philadelphia. In 1948 their first game was broadcasted on television. The speed limit sign on Ole Miss campus states a number 18 (miles per hour) dedicated to Archie Manning who had the same number on his uniform during his playing days.
Mississippi Rebels football had a number of coaches that made the team strong with each year to come. The biggest success that the team had lived is under six times winner ‘SEC Couch of the Year’ John Vaught’s guidance. He became Rebels coach in the year 1947 and guided the team to become unbeatables for the next 24 years. During his reign Vaught led 23 winnings to the team including the six SEC’s championships (1947, 1954, 1955, 1960, 1962 & 1963) and three national championships (1959, 1960 & 1962). In 1962 the Rebels had an undefeated season when they ended the season with 10 to 0 wins as national champions. In 1970 Vaught left the position of Rebel’s coach due to his health and Billy R. Kinard became the coach. Later Ken Cooper, Steve Sloan, Billy Brewer, Tommy Tuberville, David Citcliffe, Ed Orgeron and currently Houston Nutt have served the Rebels as their head coaches.
In the year 2007, unfortunately Mississippi Rebels didn’t sustain their 25 years of wining position in SEC as they went winless for the very first time during the year. They ended the season at 3-9. In 2008 the head coach of the team was replaced and the team kicked back some action with season’s five game win streak and sustained a better rank. 2009 was opened with loads of expectations but the Rebels didn’t sustain them either they played strongly at their hometown but didn’t come well on their games outside the home. In 2010 the performance of the team was not as unbeatables in Vaught’s era. The referendum at university was conducted in which the suggestion of changing Rebel’s mascot from Col. Rebel to Rebel Black Bear was progressed.
With you being a witness, Mississippi Rebels football is one of the teams that have emerged as the strongest team of their time.
