They became the first team in 1937 that flied to a game from Memphis, Tennessee to Philadelphia. In 1948 their first game was broadcasted on television. Mississippi Rebels football had a number of coaches that made the team strong with each year to come. The biggest success that the team had lived is under six times winner ‘SEC Couch of the Year’ John Vaught’s guidance. He became Rebels coach in the year 1947 and guided the team to become unbeatables for the next 24 years. During his reign Vaught led 23 winnings to the team including the six SEC’s championships (1947, 1954, 1955, 1960, 1962 & 1963) and three national championships (1959, 1960 & 1962). In 1962 the Rebels had an undefeated season when they ended the season with 10 to 0 wins as national champions. In 1970 Vaught left the position of Rebel’s coach due to his health and Billy R. Kinard became the coach. Later Ken Cooper, Steve Sloan, Billy Brewer, Tommy Tuberville, David Citcliffe, Ed Orgeron and currently Houston Nutt have served the Rebels as their head coaches.
In the year 2007, unfortunately Mississippi Rebels didn’t sustain their 25 years of wining position in SEC as they went winless for the very first time during the year. They ended the season at 3-9. In 2008 the head coach of the team was replaced and the team kicked back some action with season’s five game win streak and sustained a better rank. 2009 was opened with loads of expectations but the Rebels didn’t sustain them either they played strongly at their hometown but didn’t come well on their games outside the home. In 2010 the performance of the team was not as unbeatables in Vaught’s era. The referendum at university was conducted in which the suggestion of changing Rebel’s mascot from Col. Rebel to Rebel Black Bear was progressed.
