In 1956, the four Greats of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis got together for what many consider to be one of the greatest and certainly the best rock jam session of all time. Million Dollar Quartet is the exhilarating new musical on Broadway which is based on the true story of that session. The musical, written by Floyd Mutrux and Colin Escott and directed by Erin Schaeffer and Floyd Mutrux, captures the spirit of that historical recording in great style. The show premiered in Florida in 2007 and broke many box office records. Million Dollar Quartet came to Chicago the next year where it is still running successfully. In 2011, Million Dollar Quartet tickets premiered at the West End with an acclaimed cast of Bill Ward, Michael Malarkey, Ben Goddard, Derek Hagen, Robert Britton Lyons and , Francesca Jackson. The musical has also opened Off Broadway along with a United States National Tour.

The show opened on Broadway in 2010 to a great reception by both critics and the audience. The original cast recording was also released soon thereafter. The Broadway show was nominated for a number of awards in 2010 including the Drama Desk Outstanding Musical Award and the Drama League Awards for Distinguished Production. It was nominated for the Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical, Best Musical and Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for Levi Kreis which he won. Levi Kreis was also awarded the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical.

The fact that they were there together at the same time was a miracle in itself. Jerry Lee Lewis had come to record a song with Carl Perkins. Johnny Cash had come for a business meeting. Elvis Presley and his girlfriend Dianne just happened to stop by. The man behind all this was the famous music producer Sam Phillips who is credited with having discovered all four. They were at different stages of their career; Elvis was already a chart-topper, Lewis was a rising star, Cash was a newcomer and Perkins was also beginning his rise in Rock and Roll.

What happened next is stuff of Rock legend as soon they found themselves turning into a Rock ‘n’ Roll Band and having an impromptu jam session. The occasion was made more special by the fact that this would be the first and last time that they would ever be together. Million Dollar Quartet adds to the events of that session with the narrative of how all four were discovered by Sam Phillips and follows their careers as they become the biggest names of the music industry. Million Dollar Quartet is a showcase for the talents of the four most revered names of Pop as well as being a brief history of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The plot is entertaining but the limelight is certainly placed on the music which is performed live onstage, making the atmosphere as electrical as any Rock concert. Getting to see the hits of so many great artists together is any Music lover’s dream come true.

The four actors playing the four singers do a commendable job and The New York Times called them “Gifted musicians and likable performers…”. They are able to impersonate their illustrious characters with aplomb without making too much of an effort which would have seemed out of place. They perform some of the biggest Rock hits of all time with skill and passion worthy of their characters. It is an electrifying and thrilling show which turns Rock ‘n’ Roll nostalgia back to life.
