Mavis Staples is a famous gospel and rhythm blues singer, activist and actress belonging to Chicago, Illinois. In 1950, Staples started her musical career with a group that was made up of her family members. Initially, the group performed at a number of local churches and also appeared every week on a radio station. In 1956, the family group released a hit single Uncloudy Day. After Mavis’ graduation, the band hit the road with their music. The group was led by Roebuck Staples. The band also included her siblings and it as named “God’s Greatest Hitmakers.” If you wish to catch Staples in a live concert, you can now book your cheap Mavis Staples tickets online!
Mavis Staples, along with her family band, found success real quick. From being one of the best gospel bands, it became America’s most influential spirituality based band. During the 60s, the ensemble became the official voice of the civil movement led by Martin Luther King Jr. The main reason for that was their close friendship with King. The band performed a number of meaningful songs, including cover of Bob Dylan’s song A Hard Rain’s a Gonna Fall and “For What It’s Worth” of Stephen Stills.
Mavis Staples embarked a solo career in the late 60s. She signed with Epic Records while still with the Staple Singers band and released a song Crying in the Chapel. In 1994, the same song was rereleased and included in “Lost Soul” collection by Sony Music. During 1969, Staple’s first solo self titled album hit the market. It was followed by a specific “soundtrack” album named “A Piece of the Action.” The album was released with Curtom Records. Another self titled album was released during 1984 which was followed by two more albums under the direction of Prince, the rock star.
Mavis Staples released her next album in 1989 by the name “Time Waits for No One,” which was followed by “The Voice” in 1993. The Voice was included in the list of Top Ten Albums of 1993 by People magazine. In 1996 she released a tribute album named “Spirituals & Gospels: A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson”. Mahalia Jackson was a close relative as well as inspiration for Staples. After a long hiatus, Staples signed a contract with Alligator Records and released “Have a Little Faith” album in 2004. The album was production of Tim Tullio. This spiritual album included a number of semi acoustic tracks.
Mavis Staples made a contribution in John Scofield’s Verve in 2004. The album was titled “That’s What I Say” which was a tribute to Ray Charles. The same year, Mavis embarked on a tour with Scofield, Steve Hass and Gary Versace in order to promote the album. The tour was a great success. In the April of 2007, Staples released “We’ll Never Turn Back,” the album that was made up of a lots of tracks based on civil rights movement and gospel songs. Staples has collaborated with a number of famous musicians, including Bob Dylan. Dylan and Staples were nominated in the category of “Best Pop Collaboration” Grammy Award in 2003. The nomination was for their song Gotta Change My Way of Thinking.
On the opening ceremony of Stax Museum of American Soul Music at Orpheum Theatre, Mavis Staples performed with a number of her follow musicians. On the 50th anniversary of Stax Music Academy, Staples performed once again, which was in 2007. She was the judge of Independent Music Awards in support of young musicians. Along with Jeff Tweedy, Staples appeared at Rally to Restore Sanity in 2010. Staples makes occasional appearances in different concerts and arranges her personal tours as well.
