Massey Hall is one of the oldest event venues that are located in the downtown area of Toronto Canada. Designed by the architect Sidney Badgley, Massey hall opened its gates for patrons back in 1894, and it has been active ever since. Back in the days, hall’s original seating capacity was 3,500, but later after extensive overhauls in 1940s, the seating capacity of the hall was reduced down to 2,765. The hall was built with the construction cost of $152,390.75 which was financed by Hart Massey.

The Hall’s further renovations in 1933 were also financed by the Massey Foundation. After opening in 1894, the first event the hall hosted was a concert that was held on June 14, 1894. Massey Hall has included a number of high profile personalities as its audience members including George V and Queen Mary. And many famous people also made their appearance on the stage of Massey Hall. Some of those people and acts include Golden Earring, Mathew Good, Winston Churchill, Pink Floyd , Neil Young, Kelly Clarkson, Oscar Peterson, The Police, Bob Dylan, Celine Dion, Alicia Keys, Conan O’ Brien, Eddie Vedder, Tears for Fears, Dalai Lama and many more. Massey Hall was also the site for famous Charlie Parker- Dizzy Gillespie concert that was held in May of 1953 as Jazz at Massey Hall.

Later in 1981, Massey Hall became the National Historic Site of Canada. 1994 marked the 100 th Anniversary of the hall since its opening, and this event was celebrated by overhauling the hall’s basement and turning it into a full fledged bar. Before that time, alcohol wasn’t allowed in the Hall. The bar was named Centuries and the walls of the bar features a number of photos of the artists who have performed at venue over the years, and some of them even bear an autograph by them. The bar has the capacity of upholding 220 people within its vicinity which is why it is mainly used for hosting after show parties or CD releases. Almost five years after the addition of the Centuries, another bar was added to the hall’s balcony lounge.

The Massey Hall was erected to fulfill the need of a concert hall, where from all over the city of Toronto could come and enjoy choral music. The design of the building also includes an exterior neoclassical façade which is present on the exterior of the building. The idea of having a façade originally came from Hart Massey’s daughter. As far as the interior of the hall is concerned, it is highly inspired by Sullivan’s Chicago Auditorium as well as the famous Alhambra Palace in Spain.
