Hybrid Theory came out in 2000, & made up for half a decade’s wait with a stunning reception. With awards & accolades raining down, Linkin Park went on to perform over three hundred concerts in a single year. Relentless touring & the release of a DVD & a remix album made sure they were a permanent presence on the charts before the great success of Meteora in 2003, named after the legendary monasteries in Greece. Side projects then meant the band took a hiatus, with Shinoda collaborating with rapper Jay-Z for his solo project Fort Minor, while Bennington appeared for Dead by Sunrise. There has been a marked change in the approach of the band, with Shinoda doing less rap & more vocals, and elements of hip hop & alternative rock appearing more often than a heavy metal approach.

Hybrid Theory hit Diamond certification in the US, starting off with the worldwide hit “In the End” (#2) that launched Linkin Park globally. “One Step Closer” & “Crawling” were other big hits, with the latter scooping a Grammy. The Reanimation remix went #2 on Billboard, & Meteora sold 10 million copies, giving off the Platinum single “Numb” & other chartbusters like “Somewhere I Belong” & Faint”. Experimentation with the Collision Course EP was hugely successful (#1), with Jay-Z & Linkin Park winning a Grammy for the “Numb/Encore” mashup. “Bleed It Out”(Paltinum), “Shadow of the Day” (Platinum) & “What I’ve Done” (2xPlatinum) made sure Minutes to Midnight went Double Platinum in US, & A Thousand Suns followed up last year.
