Kendrick Lamar is an American hip hop artist from Compton, California who has been active in music since 2003. It attracted the attention of iconic hip hop producer Dr. Dre, who signed him onto his record label, Aftermath Entertainment and also featured him on his album, Detox. He also worked with Snoop Dogg and was featured in Complex magazine the same year.
 
In 2011, he was featured in XXL Magazine’s Freshman Class and featured on the magazine’s cover. In 2011, he began work on his first full length studio album. Its first single was released before the album and was titled HiiPoWeR, produced with J. Cole.
 
He also released a mixtape titled Ronald Reagan Era featuring RZA of the Wu–Tang Clan. He released his first album that year which went on to sell a massive five thousand plus albums in its week of release.  The same year, he performed on stage with Game, Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre in West Los Angeles, with the three hip hop artists dubbing him the New King of the West Coast. He also appeared on several albums that year by Game, Tech N9ne, 9th Wonder and Drake.
