Kendrick Lamar is an American hip hop artist from Compton, California who has been active in music since 2003. He is a rapper and a songwriter whose music has been released by such record labels as Top Dawg Entertainment, Interscope Records and Aftermath Entertainment. He has played and recorded music with the likes of J. Cole, Jay Rock, Black Hippy, Game, Dr Dre and Drake. He was first signed onto Top Dawg Entertainment, which then entered into a joint venture deal with Interscope Records and Aftermath. Kendrick Lamar rose to fame with the release of his mixtape, Overly Dedicated, in 2010. Two years later, in 2005, he released his second mixtape, dubbed Training Day.
 
In 2006, Kendrick Lamar joined Ya Boy and Jay Rock to open up for Game in his US tour. He was also featured on two songs released by Game, notably Cali Niggaz and The Cypha. In 2008, he appeared on Jay Rock’s music video. He aso gained more attention when he participated in a rap battle with Charles Hamilton.  In 2009, he released a mixtape dubbed C4, inspired by Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III LP. He released a second self–titled mixtape that year and then founded Black Hippy with Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Ab–Soul.
 
In 2009, he toured the US with Jay Rock and Tech N9ne as part of The Independent Grind tour. In 2010, he released Overly Dedicated, his next mixtape which contained a number of sensational songs, most notably Ignorance Is Bliss. It attracted the attention of iconic hip hop producer Dr. Dre, who signed him onto his record label, Aftermath Entertainment and also featured him on his album, Detox. He also worked with Snoop Dogg and was featured in Complex magazine the same year.
 
In 2011, he was featured in XXL Magazine’s Freshman Class and featured on the magazine’s cover. In 2011, he began work on his first full length studio album. Its first single was released before the album and was titled HiiPoWeR, produced with J. Cole.
 
He also released a mixtape titled Ronald Reagan Era featuring RZA of the Wu–Tang Clan. He released his first album that year which went on to sell a massive five thousand plus albums in its week of release.  The same year, he performed on stage with Game, Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre in West Los Angeles, with the three hip hop artists dubbing him the New King of the West Coast. He also appeared on several albums that year by Game, Tech N9ne, 9^th Wonder and Drake.
