Kathy Mattea birth place is South Charleston, West Virginia. She was born in 1959 as Kathleen Alice Mattea. She graduated from Nitro High School. It was during her teens that she discovered her passion for music and singing while she was camping as a girl scout. During the mid 70’s she joined a bluegrass band named Pennsboro, this was the time when she was a student at the West Virginia University. Soon she left study and went to Nashville to pursue a career in music. It was here in Nashville that she worked as a tour guide taking people through the famous Country Music Hall of Fame. Apart from this she also worked as a backing vocalist for well known country music artist Bobby Goldsboro. Soon Mattea was cited by Mercury Records head Frank Jones. She signed her first record deal in 1983 with Mercury Nashville Records. She is not just a good singer but also a fine lyricist and can fluently play guitar.
 
Mattea released her debut album in 1984 that was self-titled. The very next year she released From My Heart, both these albums landed at #42 on US Country charts. In 1986 came Walk the Ways the Wind Blows that charted at #11. Unstated Honey was the fifth studio album by Kathy but it was the first one to enter the top ten position on US Country at #6 and it sold well earning a gold certification. In 1989 Willow in the Wind went in music stores, this proved to be one of the best albums by her as it was the first one to enter US Billboard and Canadian charts. It went gold and till date remains the highest charting album be her on US Country charts. Since then Kathy has released three more gold albums namely Time Passes By, Lonesome Standard Time and Walking Away a Winner.
 
In 2008, she released Coal that landed at #64 on US Country and this is the only album that entered the US Top Bluegrass Album Charts at #1. Her latest album till date is Calling me Home that was released by Sugar Hill records in 2012. This album was at #54 in US Country, #2 on Bluegrass and #21 on US Folk Albums. Kathy has got a long list of chart hitting singles to her name. Some of the songs that topped the Hot Country Song chart are “Burnin’ Old Memories”, “Come From the Heart”, “Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses” and “Goin Gone”. “Come from the Heart” and “Eighteen Wheels and A Dozen Roses” also topped charts in Canada. Kathy has collaborated with other music artists such as Tanya Tucker, Dolly Parton, The Red Hots, Randy Travis, Garth Brooks and Kenny Rogers. Acclaimed folk and country music singer Mary Chapin Carpenter sang with Mattea for a concert of VH1 channel. One of her famous songs namely “Mary, Did You Know?” from her Christmas music album Good News has been covered by artists like Reba McEntire and Kenny Rogers. Mattea has also got one platinum certified compilation album A collection of Hits to her name.
