Date & Time

It seems that John Oates' musical oats were sown even before he was born as he started singing the same time he started talking and had curled his fingers around a guitar's neck by the time he turned five. His professional career has spanned four decades and shows no signs of coming to a halt anytime soon. He is widely known in the world of rock as one-half of the popular duo of Hall & Oates that he formed with Daryl Hall whilst John and he were still in college. As part of Hall & Oates, John has scored a whopping 17 top-ten hits on The Billboard Hot 100, including 6 number one singles, and have had four of their albums chart in the top ten of Billboard 200. Claim some John Oates tickets to relish his bountiful repertoire.

Born in 1949 in the city of New York, John Oates took to singing and playing music like fish to water and spent most of his childhood in a small town on the outskirts of Philadelphia after his family made the move from the Big Apple. This was the time of the birth of rock music and John Oates started making the respective tunes an essential part of his musical regimen, collecting 54 rpm records that only contained singles of artists such as Chuck Berry, the Everly Brothers, Little Richard, and of course the "King" Elvis Presley. John's little AM transistor radio was his lifeline to the world of R&B as he perpetually tried to tune into the local radio stations to provision for his symphonic sustenance.  When the 1960s hit, John Oates developed a penchant for folk music courtesy his buddy's older brother, and started taking in the artsy vibes of the likes of Joan Baez, Dave Von Ronk and Child's Ballads. He also became a devoted attendee of the local folk music festivals in the Philly region as well as nearby Newport.

Towards the end of the sixties, John Oates started attending Temple University and immersed himself full in the Philly music scene. He wrote and recorded his first song “I Need Your Love” in 1966 and the single enjoyed some airtime on the local R&B stations. John polished his sound whilst having a guitar teacher by the name of Jerry Ricks as his musical mentor. However, it was to be his befriending Daryl Hall that blossomed into a partnership that went mainstream in 1972 when the duo was signed onto Atlantic Records, with their debut album Whole Oats coming out the same year. However it was with their third record War Babies released in 1974 that Hall & Oates achieved chart success, with the album entering the Billboard 200. The follow-up fully self-titled record Daryl Hall & John Oates peaked at the 17th spot on Billboard 200 and spawned the duo's first pair of top-ten Billboard Hot 100 hits in "She's Gone" and "Sara Smile".

The hits followed throughout the seventies, with "Rich Girl" becoming the pair's first #1 Billboard Hot 100 single. More top-twenty hits followed, namely "It's a Laugh," "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and "Wait For Me" as well as "You Make My Dreams" that entered the Billboard Hot 100's top-ten slot in 1981. The duo's 1982 record Private Eyes became their first Billboard 200 top-ten album, with the title track and "Kiss on My List" topping the Billboard Hot 100. In the mid eighties, Hall & Oates were part of the iconic lineup that performed in the first Live Aid concert and recorded the iconic song "We Are The World". The 1982 track "Maneater" that became another Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper has since become their signature number, having been featured in the soundtracks of numerous films and television shows.

Though John Oates does not have any Grammies to his credit, he and Daryl Hall have clinched many MTV VMAs and American Music Awards, besides being inducted into the prestigious American Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005. In 2008, the duo became the recipients of the coveted "BMI Icon Award" for their scintillating songwriting over the decades that has materialized in the form of more than 80 million records sold around the world. So book some John Oates tickets now for a resounding celebration of rock ditties that have defined the times.
