In its 128 years old history, the Infinity Hall has seen many ups and downs. It was built in 1883, and although it is not known who actually built it, it is suspected that one of the famous architects of the time, Stanford White built it. In the beginning it was not just a venue for performing arts, but it served as a saloon, barber shop and an opera house. Its original name was Norfolk Village Hallbut was also known as the Norfolk Opera House. Till the late 1940’s, it served as the place in Norfolk for theatrical presentations and vaudeville. From 1940’s to 1980’s it essentially became a grocery store and a restaurant. It closed down in 1994 and reopened in 1998.
Infinity Hall’s building (it wasn’t called Infinity Hall till 2007) was bought by Richard Smithies and Maura Cavanaugh , play-writers and theatre producers, in 1998. They heavily invested in it and with a hefty cost of $650,000 turned the building into top-class theatre for performing arts. The renovation of the building included the construction of an observation tower, which was part of the original structure. The new owners called the renovated building, Greenwoods Theatre. Till 2007, the Greenwoods Theatre hosted some of the best musical and dramatic productions in Norfolk. Unfortunately, the Theatre had to close down due to financial hardships.
It was sold once again in 2007 to Dan Hincks . Hincks further invested money in the building and turned it into a world-class venue, fit to host the very best the world of performing arts has to offer. With exterior and interior makeover, including expansion of the lower level, new wood finishing, cabaret mezzanine seating, modern green room facilities, installation of world-class Meyer sound system, and building of Infinity Bistro, the venue was turned into a 300-seat performing arts venue. It was actually Hincks who named it, Infinity Hall.
The Hallopened its doors in October, 2008 and Kenny Rankin was the guest performer. Ever since Rankin, some of the best artists like Todd Rundgren, Richie Havens, Spyro Gyra and Melissa Manchester , have lined up to perform at Infinity Hall. Till 2010, over 400 concerts, attracting well over 80,000 attendees, have been performed here.
